POLYESTER
INTRODUCTION
• Polyester is a synthetic fiber derived from coal,
air, water, and petroleum.
• Polyester means poly – esters i.e. many
ester groups.
• Ester is the salt formed from the reaction
between an alcohol and an acid.
• “Long chain of polymers with a composition of
85% ester with a dihydric alcohol and
terephthalic acid”
• The unit block of polyester is polyethelene –
terepthalate.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
• Filaments are generally white
• Filaments or staple fibers are fine, regular and
translucent and normally it has a circular cross
section
• The luster of polyester fiber is high due to its
translucent even rodlike structure
• Specific gravity of polyester is 1.38
• Filaments and staple fibers are strong to very
strong because of their extremely crystalline
polymer system
• Moderate elongation
• Good elongation recovery
• Resiliency of polyester fiber is excellent
• Polyester filaments and fibers are hydrophobic
(MR = 0.4%)
• Polyester does not shrink when wet because of
it’s low moisture regain
• Very good abrasion resistance
• Poor heat conductivity
• Polyester shrinks from flame and will melt,
leaving a hard black residue
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
• Good resistance to acid in cold condition
• Surface hydrolysis takes place on reaction
with alkali therefore, polyester textile
material retain their whiteness during
laundering
• It does not require bleaching and can easily
retain its whiteness
• Polyester are not harmed by solvents
MANUFACTURING PROCESS

MANUFACTURING FILAMENT YARN

• Polymerization
• Drying
• Melt spinning
• Drawing the fiber
• Winding
TYPES OF POLYESTER
PET- Ethylene terephthalate, is the most popular
type of polyester used for fabrics. Ethylene
glycol is mixed with either terephthalic acid or
methyl ester along with an antimony catalyst.
PCDT- PCDT polyester uses a chemical combination
called poly-1, 4-cyclohexylene-dimethylene
terephthalate. It offers the fabric greater
resilience and elasticity. PCDT polyester is
ideal for heavier textiles such as curtains and
furniture coverings.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT
1. Eco Circle Plant Fiber is a plant-based PET
(polyester). The new fiber contains 30% sugarcane,
which replaces 30% of the oil needed for traditional
polyester. Teijin, the company behind the fiber, said it
will have a closed-loop recycling system at the end of
the fabric’s life.
2. Synthetic fiber maker Trevira launched a new brand
called Sinfineco, its first range of recycled polyester
yarns that meet the Global Recycled Standard and the
GCS-NL recycled claim standard.
3. DuPont’s new Apexa fiber, a biodegradable polyester that
decomposes through industrial composting, is getting play
in the environmentally conscious outerwear sector.
USAGE
• Many jackets and quilted garments are made of
polyester.
• Apparel- shirt, pant, top, kurti etc.
• Microdenier polyester is used in sportswear,
rainwear, and other apparel.
• Polyester is also used extensively in
furnishings: sheets and bedding, curtains, table
linens, and upholstery fabrics
• Polyester fiberfill is a low cost alternative to
down. It is used in pillows, comforters, sleeping
bags, and quilted fabric.
SEER SUCKER
INTRODUCTION
• Seersucker fabric, which is striped or
checkered, is fabric that originally made in
India, and is from where it derives its name.

• The name seersucker comes from the Hindi

word ‘shir o shekar’ which directly translates
to ‘milk and sugar’.
DESCRIPTION
• It is specially woven to give the crinkled effect.
• Seersucker doesn’t crease in the same way
ordinary fabric might, which creates added
durability and makes it ideal for travelling in.
• Its natural puckering also creates extra pockets
of space as the fabric sits off the layer beneath,
allowing for increased air circulation and
breathability.
• Another advantage of this fabric is that it does
not need ironing or pressing as it is supposed to
be wrinkled.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
• Most fabrics are created with their warp yarn
being held in uniform tension. Seersucker is
different due to its crinkled look. This fabric is
made with the slack-tension weaving process
which involves two warps must be used.
• One warp is held under regular tension,
producing a plain stripe. A second warp is held
at a different, most likely higher tension to
produce the crinkled stripe. With one thread
being slack and the other tight, the result is a
puckered effect.
TYPES
1. 100% Cotton seersucker
• This fabric is thicker, breathable and less prone
to wrinkling
• In 100% cotton seersucker, the ridges within
the fabric can be felt.
2. Polyester blended seersucker
• This type of seersucker is often used by
cheaper brands with low cost and likely high
markups.
• This type of seersucker wrinkles almost
immediately.

USAGE
1. Seersucker is commonly used to make suits, shorts, shirts
and robes.
2. Drape and curtains made out of seersucker fabric work well
in warm climates as they allow for air circulation
3. Seersucker fabric is most commonly the blue-and-white
stripe pattern
4. Seersucker fabric is making a comeback, especially in
active wear. With the fabric giving some air circulation during
an activity, it is a great fabric to keep cool in!
POPLIN
INTRODUCTION
• Poplin Fabric is derived from the French word
“papeline” and is sometimes referred to as
tabinet. The term 'poplin' appeared in the 15th
century in Avignon, France. The name referred
to the Papal residence where it was first
produced.
• Back then it was made with silk warp and wool
weft. Poplin is now made with wool, cotton, silk,
rayon, polyester or a mixture of these.
DESCRIPTION
• Poplin is made with the plain weave. Poplin describes the
weave rather than the fabric. Poplin has very fine, closely
spaced, crosswise ribs and contains a heavier filling yarn and
several number of warp yarns.
• Poplin fabric is characterised by its distinctive ribbed texture
and tightly closed weave.
• The poplin fabric has a very smooth finish, which is attained
by one by one crossing of warp and weft yarns, thus
imparting the fabric with a smooth hand feel and an even
surface.
• Poplin fabric is easy to maintain and does not wrinkle easily.
The poplin clothes can be simply washed in a machine in
warm water and can be tumble dried like regular clothing.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
• Poplin traditionally consisted of a silk warp with a
weft of worsted yarn.
• In this case, as the weft is in the form of a stout cord
the fabric has a rigid structure, like rep, which gave
depth and softness to the lustre of the silky surface.
The ribs run across the fabric from selvage to
selvedge.
• The rib effect is developed by a deliberate
unbalancing of the fabric structure. The warp yarns
are very closely set and the weft yarns are
corresponding opened out so that in a good quality
poplin there will be twice as many warps yarns per
inch than there are weft yarns.

because it is lightweight, soft and easy to maintain.
● Poplin material can also be used for raincoats if it is
given a water-repellent finish.
● It can also be used in home decor as upholstery,
tablecloths, wall hangings, bedding, pillow cushions
and covers, banners, patchwork and quilting , etc.
● In countries like United Kingdom, France, the United
States etc. polyester poplin is often used to make
