BLACK BOX
Cockpit Voice recorder and Flight data recorder
 What is Black box….?
• Black box is a combination of two component known as
Flight data recorder (FDR) and Cockpit voice recorder
(CVR) and can provide valuable information that can later
be analyzed in the event of an accident or serious
malfunction of the aircraft or any of it‘s system.
• It is compulsory for all commercial Aircraft to carry black
box which is in service condition
• To get the deep understanding of black box we have to
understand it’s component and how they work.
 COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER
(CVR)
• Cockpit voice recorder or better known as CVR is an voice recorder unit and is
the part of black box.
• The CVR has It’s own Selft test (BITE TEST) and comes with 3.5mm Jack point,
the storage medium used in modern CVR is one or more SSD (Solid state drive)
which is light in weight and fast in operation.
• It contain ULB (Under water locator beacon) which activates when black box sink
in the sea and start immersing light to sent location of it
• And it comes by it’s own battery which is lithium Battery and self life upto 6years
• It Records last 2hrs of voice through Hot mic,Captain mic, F/O mic and
Observer’s mic.
 FLIGHT DATA RECORDER
(FDR)
• Flight data recorder (FDR) is the same as Cockpit voice recorder
(CVR) and but instead of recording voice it records the flight
parameters such as Altitude, Heading etc.
• FDR and CVR both are in Red or Bright Orange in colour so that they
can easily identified by the investigator.
• They also comes with Underwater locator beacon (ULB) which
activates when in contact of water.
• They also have a florescent strip on the housing on CVR and FDR so
that they can glow on the Dark place.
• There are N number of parameter FDR records but the important
parameters are Clock,pressure Altitude,IAS,Heading,pitch/Roll,radio
transmissions,N1,flap/spoilers,autopilot,cockpit warning,landing gear

UNDERWATER LOCATOR BEACON
(ULB)
• The Underwater locator beacon (ULB) is used to locate
the Blackbox when it sink in water. It usually fitted with
CVR and FDR.
• It has it’s own battery (Lithium Ion battery), one pole is
positive and another is negative. Water itself work as a
conductor and hence ULB starts glow
• It last upto 30 Days and it pulse light 10ms.
• It also comes with Battery self life chart written on it.
 Precaution while fitting Black
box
• Black Box should always be fitted on the upper part of tail
section of the Aircraft as that is the most safest place
• Always use the proper tools for maintenance purposes.
• Check the battery condition and make sure it is on
working condition
• Take care about ESD as it may damage components of
black box
