WHAT IS BRAIN STORMING

BRAIN STORMING:
 Brainstorming is a method for generating ideas to solve a design
problem. It usually involves a group, under the direction of a
facilitator. The strength of brainstorming is the potential participants
have in drawing associations between their ideas in a free-thinking
environment, thereby broadening the solution space.
WHAT IS BRAIN STORMING

 Brainstorming is an extremely popular ideation technique for

design teams because of the freedom they have to expand in all
directions, using out-of-the-box and lateral thinking in search of
the most effective solutions – rough answers they’ll refine later.
Marketing CEO Alex Osborn, brainstorming’s “inventor”, captured
the refined elements of creative problem-solving in his 1953
book, Applied Imagination. In brainstorming, we aim squarely at a
design problem and produce an arsenal of potential solutions. By
not only harvesting our own ideas but also considering and
building on colleagues’ notions, we cover the problem from every
angle imaginable.
EXAMPLES

Content Writing:

When content writers are getting into creative phase, many ideas come
up. Brainstorming help content writers to focus directly on ideas
generation, instead of constantly going back and forth. In a few words,
brainstorming can allow writer to stop overthinking, let the thoughts to
flow and write free without interruptions.
EXAMPLES

Studying:
• Students can learn more effectively with brainstorming because it
gives the chance for improvement in the processes of lateral, analytical
and critical thinking. Brainstorming increase the ambition for
learning at students by concentration ideas that resolve around certain
topic
EXAMPLES

Marketing:
Brainstorming answer the following questions:
“How to launch a new product?”
“How to generate targeted leads”
“Which way to develop a marketing plan”
“How to improve website usability”
In the process of creating marketing campaigns, it’s important to think of different
topics and angels, often unrelated to the final objective, but will eventually lead to the
solution that will bring positive outcome.
TYPES OF BRAIN STORMING

• Nominal Group Technique

• Reverse Brainstorming
• Content Brainstorming Key
• Question Brainstorming
• Brain Writing
•  Mind Mapping
• Team Idea Mapping
• Electronic Brainstorming (EBS)
TYPES OF BRAINSTORMING

• Nominal Group Technique:

People participate in this type of brainstorming and provide their ideas

anonymously. The ideas which are top rated are evaluated by the same group for
any further developments for which the group may be broken down into a small
set of subgroups that will work on a single aspect of an idea a selected or
allocated idea. Once the discussion is complete these subgroups will submit their
new ideas again.
TYPES OF BRAINSTORMING

•  Reverse Brainstorming:

This technique is also known as reverse thinking in which people find

ways to introduce barriers in your way and try to prevent you from the
objective you are trying to achieve. This method is suitable for small or
large groups and for people who find it complicated to create ideas or
people who have an asset but are unable to optimally use it.
TYPES OF BRAIN STORMING

•  Content Brainstorming Key :

HubSpot gives content brainstorming which is visual and is used to

frame for how a particular person thinks. The key is an Excel
spreadsheet which defines the topic chooses the audience and suggests a
content structure along with the form of a post that is graphic, audio or
video.
TYPES OF BRAIN STORMING

• Brain Writing:

The session of brainwriting 6 people are provided with paper and they
are prompted and asked to write down as many ideas on it as possible
within 5 minutes. Then each person is made to pass his or her idea to the
next person and within the next 5 minutes, the next person is asked to do
the same and generate ideas on the original suggestion.
TYPES OF BRAIN STORMING
• Mind Mapping:
In mind mapping, a diagram is used to generate information about a
particular idea or a situation. The process begins by writing a word
which is the central idea of the subject of discussion.
That word is written on the center of a board or a page and the
participants then relate to the word and expand it into different
categories related to the same word. Several branches are drawn from
the word which relates to the central word but from different categories.
These categories are then interconnected and a web of ideas is formed
around the central idea. The primary benefit of having ideas together is
to make the participants connect each idea with the other visually.
TYPES OF BRAIN STORMING

•  Electronic Brainstorming (EBS) :

When an electric medium is used to collaborate an idea such as video

conferencing it is known as electronic brainstorming. The common
network is used where every team member will contribute an idea or
suggestion and the suggestions can be adjusted put together to form a
meaningful conclusion.
IMPORTANCE OF BRAIN STORMING

Collects Different Viewpoints:

In any business, when a single person is responsible for generating all of
your ideas, those ideas are likely to become stale or repetitive at some
point. During a brainstorming session, however, you can collect ideas
from a number of others. Those ideas may not be brilliant or even
viable, but as you brainstorm together your ideas may evolve into
something that is fresh and effective. Since your coworkers or associates
likely have varying backgrounds, interests and motivations, they may
help you generate ideas that no single individual could have fleshed out
on her own.
IMPORTANCE OF BRAIN STORMING

Encourages Critical Thinking:

One major advantage of brainstorming is that it requires you to think
critically to solve a certain problem or create something innovative. The
more you brainstorm, the better you become at encountering a problem
and thinking about it critically. This means taking a topic or situation
and looking at it in a logical and clear way, free from personal bias.
Critical thinking may require you to break a topic or problem down into
smaller parts. For instance, if you need to form a campaign around a
new product, you’ll need to consider various pieces of the campaign, like
product packaging, advertising mediums and messaging.
IMPORTANCE OF BRAIN STORMING

Gets You Out Of Your Head:

When you need to be creative, your own brain can become your worst
enemy. That’s because creative thoughts may get jumbled and confused
in your head, preventing you from thinking them through clearly. You
also may come up with a vague idea, but find yourself unable to get the
idea to take definite shape.
IMPORTANCE OF BRAIN STORMING

Brainstorming Builds Teams:

When you practice brainstorming as a group, you take team ownership
of a campaign, product or event. This means that one person isn’t left
feeling like he is carrying the workload for the entire company, and also
cultivates a feeling of team ownership. Groups that practice
brainstorming together may also learn how to work together better.
Your brainstorming sessions will enable you to see certain talents or
expertise in your coworkers of which you weren’t aware, which can be a
great advantage when you need help in the future.
CONCLUSION

• Brainstorming is a process for generating new ideas.

• It uses a set of specific rules and techniques which encourage and

spark off new ideas which would never have happened under normal
circumstances.

• Traditional brainstorming can be greatly enhanced by using modern

updated techniques, materials and software.
CONCLUSION

• While there are risks involved in the early stages of establishing

brainstorming sessions, the overall benefits are enormous and with a
little preparation and thought you can run brainstorming sessions
which will improve both your own and your organization's prospects
in the short and long term.
