 A clause is any portion of a sentence that includes a subject and a verb


 Independent Clause is sentences that can stand alone as a complete
sentence.
 Examples:
1.Ali loves his sister
2.The dog ran off
 Dependent Clause is not a complete sentences but it contain noun and verb
 Examples:
1.When you come home
2.Who has a beautiful fish
Examples of subordinating conjunctions.

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCES

 Compound-complex sentence contains two independent clauses and one


dependent clause.
 Dependent clause can be at the beginning, middle, or end of a compound-
complex sentence.
 Example:
1. Erin loves her brother, and he loves her too because she pays his bills.
2. Although I like to go camping, I haven’t had the time to go lately, and I
haven’t found anyone to go with.
3. Jean had an headache after the party was over, so Paul cleaned up the house.
 We must put comma after the dependent clause when it occurs at the
beginning of the sentence.
Subordinators are in red, coordinators are in blue.

Exercises
 Find the independent and dependent clause in the compound-complex
sentence.

1. We decide that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to
watch scary movie, thought that we were wrong.

Independent clause :

Dependent clause:
1. Who like to watch scary movie
 Since they had so much fun at the party, Shay and Jason stayed late, but they
were tired in the morning.

Independent Clause:
1. They were tired in the morning
2. Shay and Jason stayed late

Dependent Clause :
1. Since they had so much fun at the party
 After the dance began, we found our friends in the other room, and we
invited them to stay with us.

Independent Clause:
1. We found our friends in the other room
2. We invited them to stay with us

Dependent Clause:
3. After the dance began
 The friends, who often play in the yard, are outside, but they will soon come
into the house.

Independent clause:
1. They will soon come into the house

Dependent clause:
2. Who often play in the yard
 Before she slept in the night, she read a book, and she finished all of her
homework.

Independent clause:
1. She read a book
2. She finished all of her homework

Dependent clause:
1.Before she slept in the night
Combine the sentences to make one compound-complex
sentence.

 1.Susan teaches the kids – live in the


neighbourhood- she comes home from work
 2.The doctor wants to prescribe physical therapy-
he ask me to see a specialist. He recommend Dr.
Smith.
 3. We didn’t have much time- we didn’t read the
final chapter. We still enjoyed the book.
