UNDERSTANDING

THE NEEDS OF SELF(I) AND


BODY –
SUKH AND SUVIDHA

HUMAN NEEDS
According to the theory of “hierarchy of
needs”- Abraham Maslow
Physiological Needs :- air, food, water
Safety Needs :- personal , financial, health
Social Needs :- love , belonging , friendship
Self -Esteem Needs :- status, respect, freedom
Self- Actualization Needs :- self – fulfillment,
personal growth,
peak experiences
PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
They are literal requirement
for human survival . If these requirements are not met (with
expectation of clothing and shelter) the human body simply
can-not continue to function. It includes:- Air ,Water
,Clothing ,Food , Shelter

SAFETY NEEDS
When we make decisions about our lives,
we try our best to ensure our own safety. Safety and security
needs are about keeping us safe from harm. These needs
increase our sense of safety and security and make us feel
more comfortable in our lives. It includes :- Personal
security ,Financial security ,Employment ,Health and
wellness
SOCIAL NEEDS
Human need to feel a sense of love &
belonging, whether it comes from large social group or small
social connections. They need to love & be loved by others.
In the absence of these elements, many people
become susceptible to loneliness, social anxiety & depression. It
includes:- Friends , Family ,Social groups ,Relationships

SELF-ESTEEM NEEDS
All humans have a need to be
respected ,appreciated and to have self-esteem. Participation in
professional activities , team participation and personal hobbies
cal all play a role in fulfilling the esteem needs. It includes:- self
confidence, status, respect .
SELF-ACTUALISATION NEEDS
It may described as full
use of talents, capabilities, etc. such people seem to be
fulfilling themselves and to be doing the best that they are
capable of doing. Self actualization people are self-aware,
concerned with personal growth, less concerned with opinion
of others. It includes:- Morality, problem solving, creativity
Self actualization I want to be myself

I want to be better than you

Social
I want to be like you and liked by you
Needs

Safety & security I want to stay alive

HUMAN BEING(NEEDS)

BODY INNER SELF

SUVIDHA SUKH
SUVIDHA
It implies that it is looking
for physical comforts & all the sources of attaining
such comforts.
•The needs of body include proper diet, breathing, water,
clothing.
• These needs are more physical in nature.
• With time these needs may change.
when our body gets used to a certain level
of comfort then we will only feel comfortable at that level.
For example :- comfort in fan, cooler, or air conditioner.
Different people have a different perception of Suvidha & will
seek a corrosponding level of Suvidha according to their
perception.
SUKH
The beauty of Sukh is that it is a
holistic & all encompassing state of mind that
creates inner Harmony.

•The needs of self include happiness, trust, respect self esteem.


•These are Sukh that one derives from various physical
facilities.
•The needs of self are fulfilled by the right understanding and
right feeling.
• Sukh depends upon thinking so many times we are
surrounded by materialistic possessions but we feel unsatisfied.
People think that their happiness depends upon our thinking
and our mental satisfaction.
I BODY

Needs are Trust, Respect Food, Clothing

Happiness Physical facilities

In quantity
Needs are Qualitative Quantitative

Needs are Right understanding & Food , clothing etc


fulfilled by right feeling

According Continuous Temporary

• Sukh ( respect is continuous)
• Suvidha (food is temporary)

For example :- Take any delicious food


Necessary & tasteful :- In beginning it satisfy my hunger & I find it
delicious

Unnecessary but tasteful :- But once my stomach is full, I find it


difficult to eat though I still enjoy the taste

Unnecessary & tasteless :- If I still continue to eat . I do not enjoy the


taste anymore.

Intolerable :- if I still go on , it becomes intolerable.


• Sukh (happiness) :- Qualitative
• Suvidha (physical facility) :- Quantitative
Notion of quantity does not apply to happiness
(Sukh)
for example :- one can-not say that one needs 5 kg of
Trust or 2 meters of respect , But one does quantity the
food, clothes, means of transport.
• Sukh (right understanding , right
feeling)
• Suvidha physico-chemical things
For example :- one may be sitting in a air conditioned room
with colleagues with whom relations are not comfortable
because of negative feelings like jealousy. There may be
Suvidha of air-condition , but Sukh will be lacking
