The Heart

WHAT IS A HEART?
• The heart is a muscular organ in humans and
other animals, which pumps blood through the
blood vessels of the circulatory system.
• The heart is located in the middle compartment of
the chest.
• In humans, other mammals, and birds, the heart is
divided into four chambers.
4 CHAMBERS OF THE HEART
• RIGHT ATRIUM -receives oxygen-
poor blood from the body and
pumps it to the right ventricle.
• RIGHT VENTRICLE -pumps the
oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
• LEFT ATRIUM -receives oxygen-
rich blood from the lungs and
pumps it to the left ventricle.
• LEFT VENTRICLE -pumps the
oxygen-rich blood to the body.
WHAT IS A HEARTBEAT?
• A heartbeat is a two-part pumping
action that takes about a second.
• DIASTOLE – The “LUB” sound in your
heart. It is when the muscle of the heart
relaxes. As the atria begin to fill, the
ventricles relax.
• SYSTOLE – The “DUB” sound in your
heart. It is when the muscle of the heart
contracts. As the ventricles are full of
blood, the pressure in the ventricles
opens the semilunar valves leading to
the aorta and pulmonary artery.
FAST HEARTBEATS?
• A rapid or fast heartbeat is when your heart is beating
faster than normal. A normal heart rate is 60 to 100 beats
per minute. Tachycardia is considered a heart rate of
greater than 100 beats per minute.

• If you are exercising, or performing any kind of activity,

your heart will normally beat faster. This allows your heart
to pump blood through out your body, to provide oxygen
to the tissues.
ARTERIES, VEINS, & CAPILLARIES
• ARTERIES take blood away from the heart to the body
organs and tissues.
• VEINS collect blood from the capillaries in the body and
return the blood to the heart.
• CAPILLARIES are tiny, thin-walled vessels which form a
network to take blood through the organs and tissues
DISTRIBUTION OF BLOOD ALL
OVER THE BODY
• Blood circulation is regulated by the circulatory system, and blood is
distributed throughout the body by the heart.
• Blood is pumped from the left ventricle of the heart through arteries and
to the capillaries.
• Capillaries have thin walls that allow red blood cells to carry oxygen and
nutrients to tissues in the body while removing carbon dioxide waste
from the tissues.
• The blood is then sent back to the right atrium of the heart through veins.
• After blood returns to the right atrium, it enters the right ventricle and is
pumped through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, then returns to the
left atrium through the pulmonary veins. Blood then enters the left
ventricle to be circulated through the systemic circulation again.
CHICHARON = BAD FOR THE HEART
• Raises the person’s risk in acquiring cardiovascular diseases.
• Full of saturated fat and trans fat – which are known to be
harmful to one’s health. Saturated fat becomes solid in room
temperature, and therefore, a big chance of increase in
cholesterol will happen if they are in the body. On the other hand,
trans fat, are unsaturated fat that causes the increase of bad
cholesterol in the body, and the decrease of good cholesterol.
• Increase of bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol will
slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that
bring blood to the brain and the heart. When a clot
forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or
stroke can happen.
TAKING CARE OF THE HEART
Get active - Daily physical activity
increases your length and quality of
life
Control cholesterol – Avoid Eat better – Eat veggies, fruits, low-
eating foods low in saturated fat dairy, fiber-rich whole grains, and
fat and trans fat lean meats including fish.
Lose weight - If you’re overweight
or obese, you can reduce your risk
for heart disease by successfully
Manage blood pressure -
losing weight and keeping it off
Your blood pressure should
stay within healthy ranges
Stop smoking - Smoking damages your
entire circulatory system, and increases
your risk for coronary heart disease,
Reduce blood sugar - Reduce hardened arteries, aneurysm and blood
consumption of simple sugars clots.
that are found in soda, candy
and sugary desserts
