TURBINE STEAM INLET SYSTEM

• The steam is supplied from a common steam

bus and condensed in the turbine.
• Speed controller is used to manipulate shaft
speed according to the load.
• Variations in load affects the balance of the
energy supplied to the turbine.
• If the net change is positive due to more
energy , the shaft will speed up and governor
will act to eliminate it by reducing the inlet
steam.
• Similarly , if the change is negative due to less
energy , the governor will try to add more
steam.
For serving these purposes we have :

 Inlet valve arrangements.

 Inlet flow , pressure and temperature
measurements.
 Governors.
Inlet Valve Arrangements
• First a gate valve is used to isolate the turbine
from steam bus.
• Next is throttle valve , used to regulate the
steam at the time of starting of turbine.
• When the turbine is warmed and attains
speed , it is left open.
• Then comes emergency valve used to stop
turbine.
• Operator has a switch for emergency valve.
• Following the emergency valve , then comes
the governor.
• After that steam flows without further control.
Inlet Measurements
• Steam pressure , flow and temperature has to
be measured.
• Signal is displayed in the control room.
• The amount of energy that is extracted from
the steam can be found by mollier diagram.
• Mollier diagram relates the enthalpy ,
pressure and temperature.
Governor
• It is installed after emergency valve.
• Used to control the steam to the turbine.
• It acts according to the load change.
• Speed control is accomplished by the
governor.
• It can be mechanical , hydraulic or electrical.
• The governor operates a pilot valve which
controls the steam inlet.

Process Parameters
• Steam pressure
It measures pressure at various points of turbine. Main steam
pressure , steam pressure after inlet valves, stage steam pressures
and exhaust steam pressure are such points.

• Steam Temperature
It is the temperature measured by temperature transmitter
provided with thermocouple, compensating leads and cold
junction compensation.

• Steam Flow
Measure with orifice head producer installed in the steam line. It is
also integrated for accounting and analysis purpose.
• Condenser level
There are two objectives of using a condenser in a steam
plant:
1. To reduce turbine exhaust pressure.
2. To recover high quality feed water.
As the exhaust steam gets condensed, the water level in the
condenser vessel changes. The level measurement is done for
operation point of view. At different levels level switches are
provided.
• Condensate Flow
The measurement of condensate water helps the operator to
decide about the quantity of make up water and hence the
amount of raw water to be treated, because the condensate
plus make up water meets the feed water demand of boiler.
The measurement is done through head orifice and using flow
transmitter.
