“2G COVERAGE DISTANCE”

The range which mobile devices connects

reliably to the cell site is not a fixed figure.
It will depend on the following factors:
1. Height of antenna over surrounding terrain
(Line Of Sight propagation).
2. The frequency of signal in use.
3. Timing limitations in some technologies ( GSM
is limited to 35 km, with 70 km being possible
with special equipment.)
4. The transmitter's rated power.
5. The required uplink/downlink data rate of the
subscriber's device.
6. The directional characteristics of the site
antenna array. NOTE:
7. Reflection and absorption of radio energy by As a rough guide, based on a tall mast and flat
terrain, it is possible to get between 50 and 70 km
buildings or vegetation. (30 – 45 miles).
8. It may also be limited by local geographical or When the terrain is hilly, the maximum
regulatory factors and weather conditions. distance can vary from as little as 5 kilometers
(3.1 mi les) to 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) due to
encroachment of intermediate objects
GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephony system
that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world especially in Asia. GSM
digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams
of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz
frequency band.

General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) is a packet-based wireless communication service  and

continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. The higher
data rates allow users to take part in video conferences and interact with multimedia Web
sites and similar applications using mobile handheld devices as well as notebook computers.
GPRS is based on Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication and complements existing
services such circuit-switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (
SMS).

EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment) is a faster version the Global System for
Mobile (GSM) wireless service designed to deliver data at rates up to 384 Kbps and
enable the delivery of multimedia and other broadband applications to mobile
phone and computer users.
