and the center of the spiral casing is 5m
above the tailwater. What is the head
extracted if the velocity of the water
entering the turbine is 10m/s?

A pelton wheel runs at a constant speed under

a head of 650 ft. The cross sectional area of the
jet is 0.50 ft2 and the nozzle is to be adjusted as
to reduce the area of the jet to 0.20 ft2. Under
these conditions, the efficiency of the wheel is
known to be 70%. Find the power output of the
wheel.
PROBLEM 4

A hydroelectric plant is supplied from a

reservoir of a capacity of 6,000,000 m3 at a
head of 170m. Assume a hydraulic efficiency of
80% and electrical efficiency of 90%. The fall in
the reservoir level after a load of 15 MW has
been supplied for 3 hrs, if the area of the
reservoir is 2.5 km2 is?
