Summary:
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, a minister and writer, is
known as for his inspirational writing on varieties of
topics.
This magazine article,” Courtesy: key to be a
happier world”, shows his convention, or a very
strong belief, that the world would be a better pace
if people were more courteous to each other.
Courtesy means showing politeness and good
manners. The writer inspires us to be courteous in
life. Courtesy is the key to the happier world.
He thinks that every kind of problems in human
relation can be solved with courtesy.
He gives example of a wife, who is crying in front of
her husband complaining about her boss, who never
shows appreciation and good manners to his staff.
Raph Waldo Emerson had said that “ good manners
are the happy way of doing things “.
Basic Elements Of Good Manners
1) A strong sense of justice
2) Empathy
3) Capacity to treat all people alike,
A strong sense of justice

Courtesy is often nothing more than a

highly developed sense of fair play i.e. in
order to have a courtesy we should
behave or treat other people in an honest
and fair way.
Here is an example of a man who has a sense of
justice, good manner and fair play. One day when
the writer’s friend was driving on a rough road
behind other car , that car was throwing dust and
smoke. But after a while the driver stop the car and
said to writer’s friend that now its your turn to
drive front and I will drive behind you . It is now my
turn to eat smoke and dust.
Empathy
A quality that enables a person to see
into the mind or heart of someone else.
It is the ability to understand another
person’s feelings , experience, or to
understand the pain or unhappiness there
and to do something to minimize it.
For example: A man in the bus was trying to
open the cap of bottle he couldn’t open it ,as his
fingers were so badly damaged by Arthritis ( A
disease that causes pain and swelling ) so he
asked to open the bus boy to open the cap . The
busboy tried it with a lot of effort and became
success. So , this shows the compassionate
( sympathy ) courtesy for a stranger
Capacity to treat all people alike
Capacity to treat all people alike, regardless
of all status or importance
E.g.: when we have doubt about some people
we act as if they are good person even though if
they are not .we give them equal importance and
regard their feeling positively

This shows that there exist courtesy to treat

all people equally.
How to improve manners
The writer truly believe that anyone can
improve his\her manner by doing these three
things:
1) Practice courtesy
2) Think in a courteous way
3) Accept courtesy
Practice courtesy

We can improve manners by practicing

courtesy . All skills require constant repetition
to become second nature ; good manners are
no exception we should concentrate on our
performance in specific area.
Be polite and courteous even to stupid
person he will be polite in return.
E.g. : One night a man was with his father on a car,
in the next way a driver in an oncoming vehicle
failed to dim his light .so he replied his father to
give him light and said that how discourteous and
stupid guy and he furthermore replied that if I
gave him light he will be discourteous , stupid and
blind and that’s a combination I don’t want to tangle
with. This shows that refusing other’s misbehavior
is also a basic requirement for improving courtesy.
Think in a courteous way
When our thoughts are predominantly self
directed we will be a discourteous person. If
on the other hand we train ourselves to be
considerate of others, if we can acquire the
habit of identifying with the problems and
hopes and fears , good manners will follow
almost automatically.
Furthermore, he had explained that courtesy
is important in marriage for husband and wife at
home it is easy to show frustration and anger to
each other if the anger is out of control the result
may be too much worst .If they could impose just
10 minutes of good manners on themselves the
worst of the storm would blow over.
Accept courtesy
Finally to have good manners we must be
able to accept courtesy, receive it gladly, and
rejoice when its comes our way.

***
Conclusion:
Life is full of minor irritations, trials, and
injustices. The only constant, daily, effective
solution is politeness, which is the golden rule to
the other it might be: blessed are the courteous.
Treat others nicely the way you want to be
treated . A smile for smile . Those who are
courteous by nature, are the lucky ones.
