A. WHAT IS A REACTION PAPER?
 A reaction paper is a task that requires
students to analyze information and give
comments on a certain text or media
(Ozzz.org).

Note:
 it is different from a review in that it is
composed in the first person and assumes
subjective point of view.
CONTENTS OF A REACTION
PAPER:
 In the first part of your paper, it should contain
information on the author and the topic, main
ideas and main points, direct quotations if
needed. Avoid personal opinion in this section.
 The second part should contain your personal
thoughts on the subject. Focus on a main
problem or address all of them and describe
your opinion. Explain how the material can
relate to the modern world, to the society or
separate individuals.

 Here are some steps and guidelines to help us
in writing a research paper:
I. Read or watch the material carefully. Repeat
this as much as needed.
II. Mark or write down interesting places or
events while reading/watching.
III. Write down your thoughts while reading or
watching.
IV. Come up with a thesis statement.

V. Compose an outline.
VI. Construct your paper.

In writing a reaction paper, you can use some


vivid examples. However, avoid using examples
which are difficult to relate to the topic. You can
also use various sources to make your
statement more argumentative.

 A reaction paper is consists of the following
main parts:

3. Conclusions
4. Lists of citations, sources, or references.

 It is a written for an audience who is


knowledgeable in the subject matter instead
of a general audience.
 When writing an article review, you will
summarize the main ideas, arguments,
positions and findings, and then critique the
article’s contributions to the field and overall
effectiveness.

Before writing your final review, you must first
conduct a SURVEY, wherein it is an activity in
which many people are being asked a question
or a series of questions in order to gather
information about what most people do or
think about the matter you are conducting a
review paper with.

Here are some steps in writing a survey:
1. Define a topic and audience
2. Search and re-search the literature
3. Take notes while reading
4. Choose the type of review that you wish to write
5. Keep the review focused, but make it broad of
interest
6. Be critical and consistent

8. Be up-to-date, but do not forget older studies

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHILE WRITING

1. Your survey must contain clearly why the
survey was done, what is it about, the
findings and the conclusions of the survey.
2. The main thing that differentiate between
good and bad survey is in ‘clarity’, proper
flow and vocabulary.

the following:
1. Subject and objective of the review paper.
2. Make list of the sources to tap.
3. Access the sources and extract the finer points

topic and content hierarchy.

5. Once the draft is ready, read it thoroughly and may
take help of your seniors if required to identify the
unwanted materials as well as define the order in

8. Ensure that your review paper summarizes at the
end your objective about the subject chosen.
9. Present it with the right attitude and confidence

work. Before writing a critique, the writer

In writing a critique, you must understand
the work that you are working on. Study it
carefully noting the main ideas of the author.
You must be able to understand the intended
audience, the subject matter of the work and its
usefulness to the expected readers.

2. CONDUCT A LITTLE RESEARCH
For you to be able to write an excellent
critique, you must have some background
information on the field of the subject of the
work. A little research maybe necessary for this
will help you identify the strengths and flaws of
the work you are critiquing.

1. INTRODUCTION
You must first start by introducing the work
you are critiquing. Assume that your readers or
audience has not come across the work before,
and doesn’t know the author either. The
introductory paragraph should end with what
instructors call as ‘thesis statement’, a sentence
summarizing your evaluation of the work as
positive, negative, or mixed.

2. SUMMARY
Give an overview of the main ideas of the work.
The key points you will highlight from the basis
of your ‘critique’. This is what you will criticize in
the next paragraph. Make sure to mention all
the main points.
Note: don’t be tempted to state your own ideas
or interest of the topic. It should be fair and
honest.

3. CRITIQUE
A comprehensive assessment of the item you are critiquing.
It should not be inclined only to negative opinions, it should
address both the achievements and failures of the creator.
Evidence from external sources should also be included and
cited accordingly.
4. CONCLUSION
it is where your overall assessment and the reasons for your
judgment is stated. You may also suggest improvement
recommendations to the creator of the work. Below this,
add a reference list for all the citations included in the
critique.
