C-ARM
C-Arm is a medical imaging
device that is based on X-ray
technology and can be used
flexibly in various ORs within a
clinic. The name is derived
from the C-shaped arm used to
connect the X-ray source and
X-ray detector to one another.

C-ARM
• C-Arm comprises a generator called as X-Ray
source and an image intensifier of flat panel
detector. It is often used in surgery,
orthopedics, traumatology, vascular surgery
and cardiology for intra-operative imaging.
The device provides high-resolution X-ray
images in real time, allowing the surgeon to
monitor progress at any point during the
surgery.

HOW DOES A The C-shaped connecting
MOBILE C- element allows movement
horizontally, vertically and around

images of the patient can be
produced from almost any angle.
The generator emits X-rays that
penetrate the patient's body. 4

•There are six main basic parts
of C-ARM machine.
• C-ARM X-Ray tube
• C-ARM image intensifier
• C-ARM CCD Camera
• C-ARM High voltage cable
• C-ARM CPU board
• Display and monitor

Generation of X-rays
THE X-RAYS ARE PRODUCED BY
THE PARTIAL CONVERSION OF
THE KINETIC ENERGY OF HIGHLY
ACCELERATED ELECTRONS INTO
X-RAY PHOTONS. INSIDE THE X-
RAY TUBE (VACUUM-SEALED), A
FILAMENT (CATHODE) IS HEATED
IN ORDER TO EMIT A CLOUD OF
ELECTRONS THAT ARE
ACCELERATED BY HIGH VOLTAGE

CATHODE AND THE ANODE

C-ARM IMAGE INTENSIFIER
AN X-RAY IMAGE INTENSIFIER (XRII) IS
AN IMAGE INTENSIFIER THAT
CONVERTS X-RAYS INTO VISIBLE
LIGHT AT HIGHER INTENSITY THAN
MERE FLUORESCENT SCREENS DO.
AN IMAGE INTENSIFIER IS ONE OF
THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF YOUR C-
ARM MACHINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE
MOST EXPENSIVE PARTS AND WILL
DEGRADE OVERTIME.
• The overall function of
an image intensifier is
to convert incident x-
ray photons to light
photons of sufficient
intensity to provide a
viewable image. This
occurs in several
stages. The first is
conversion of x-ray
photons to light
C-ARM IMAGE INTENSIFIER photons by the
input phosphor.

C-ARM CCD CAMERA
CHARGE-COUPLED DEVICE
CAMERA (CCD) – A CAMERA
WHICH INCORPORATES A CCD TO
CREATE HIGH-RESOLUTION
IMAGES UNDER A VARIETY OF
LIGHT CONDITIONS. TOGETHER
WITH THE IMAGE INTENSIFIER,
THE TWO COMPONENTS ASSURE
THE QUALITY OF YOUR IMAGES.
•Both with together make
IMAGE INTENSIFIER a good impact on image
AND CCD CAMERA quality that u see on, and
both are most expansive 13

The parts of the CPU

overtime and once it
stops working your C-

run.
• Fluoroscopy
• Angiography studies (peripheral, central and cerebral)
• Therapeutic studies (Line placements)
• Cardiac studies
• Orthopedic procedures.

The C-arm systems are commonly used for studies:

Fluoroscopy

• Fluoroscopy uses a continuous X-ray beam with a special

machine called a C-arm. The C-arm can be used to rotate
around a person's body to create a sequence of images
that are projected onto a fluorescent screen, or
television-like monitor. ... Still images are also captured
and stored electronically on a computer
17
• Rotational  angiography is a
medical imaging technique based
on x-ray, that allows to acquire CT-
like 3D volumes during hybrid
surgery or during a catheter
intervention using a fixed C-Arm.
The fixed C-Arm thereby rotates
D SA around the patient and acquires a
series of x-ray images that are
then reconstructed through
software algorithms into a 3D
image.Synonyms for rotational
angiography include flat-
panel volume CT and cone-beam C

Therapeutic studies

• Therapeutic trials are
ones which enroll
patients and provide a
specific treatment to
the patients to study its
impact on cancer.

also show us live study of
