Definition of a System
• It constitutes a set of integrated components working
together with common objective to fulfil some designated
user need.
• A system will respond to user needs in an effective and
efficient manner with the resource available and
constraints applicable.

Definition of System Engineering
The Department of Defence (DOD) defines Systems
Engineering as the Process that:
 Transforms operational needs and requirements into an
integrated system design solution through concurrent
consideration of all Life Cycle needs
 Ensures that system definition and design reflect the
requirements for all system elements
 Ensures the compatibility, interoperability and integration of
all functional and physical interfaces
 Characterizes and manages technical risk
Definition of System Engineering
It is the effective “application of scientific and engineering
efforts to transform an operational need into a defined system
configuration” through top down iterative process of
requirement analysis,
functional analysis,
synthesis,
design optimisation,
tests,
evaluation,
validation…

System Engineering Processes
The following Process Architecture Diagram is the graphical
representation of the SE Process. It contains the Development
Processes and the Supporting Processes, as well as the
interconnections between these Processes

Processes can be divided in two categories:

1. Development Processes: Processes leading to the Certified Aircraft
System.
2. Supporting Processes: Performed at all levels of the System
Engineering Process.

Conclusion
• Systems engineering deals with work-processes,
optimization methods and tools to manage risks in large
complex projects where issues in different disciplines
become more difficult, and it overlaps with both technical
and human centered disciplines
• System Engineering formalizes the approach in
development of a complex system and so can identify new
methods and research opportunities in the process.
