The Efficiency of an electric geyser is measured on the basis of Standing loss (kWh/24hour/45°C difference).

Standing loss is the energy consumption measurement of a filled water heater, after steady state conditions
have been reached when connected to electrical supply and when no water is drawn for 24 hours.
The star rating for the electric geysers is given based on the standing losses. The highest rating is given to that
geyser which has the lowest standing losses .

(a) “Appliance” or ”Unit” means an electric storage water heaters
described in Indian standard IS 2082:1993 and IS 302-2-21 (both with all
amendments applicable); (b) “Authority” means the Central
Government; (d) “Participant” means manufacturers, importers or
retailers of the water heater; (e) “Rated capacity (Litre)” means zero
negative tolerance on rated capacity of heaters and the measured
capacity shall not be less than the rated capacity; (f) “Rated input”
means the electrical power input shown on the nameplate of the
electric storage water heaters; (g) “Rated Power (kW)” means the
power input, which shall be within +5% /-10% of the rated capacity as
prescribed in IS 302-2-21: 1992 and IS 302-1: 2008 (both with all
applicable amendments); (h) “Standing loss (kWh/24 hour/45o C)”
means the energy consumption of a filled water heater, after steady
state conditions have been reached when connected to electrical
supply, and when no water is drawn for twenty-four hours and the
standing loss shall be calculated as per IS 2082:1993 and comply with
the star rating requirement as given in Tables (as applicable) 1, 2 and 3
of this standard; (i) “Star Rating Band” means a range of standing loss
(kWh/24Hr/45o C) which is used for determining the number of stars
displayed on the star label; and (j) “Star Label” means Star label as
described in the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Particulars and Manner of
their Display on Labels of Water Heater) Regulations, 2015.
