KILL SYSTEM FOR THE

UNIVATION REACTOR
Bhartendu Vimal
Shreyosi De
WHAT IS KILL?
 A “KILL” involves injection of a CATALYST POISON (modifier C) into the cycle gas line
downstream of the Cycle Gas Cooler

 Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas in high pressure (~155 Kg/cm 2g) cylinders is the kill poison.

 CO quickly mixes into the fluidized bed polymer, deactivates the catalyst and stops or
inhibits the reaction.

 KILL may be either manually or automatically actuated by any of several methods.

 CO may be purged (removed) from the system with nitrogen (N2) or ethylene (C2H4).

 According to severity types of kill are:

 Mini Kill
 Type-I
 Type-III
 Type-II

 KILL SYSTEM ACTIVATED alarm comes on the activation of KILL

SIGNIFICANCE OF KILL PERMISSIVE
Kill permissive is required for the following systems to operate:
 Permissive to operate Liquid Recycle Valves (logic 52-2-1)
 FIC-41106 controls modifier RO valve FV-41106 (valve fails close otherwise)
 FIC-41108 controls Butene-1 / Hexene-1 valve FV-41108 (valve fails close
otherwise)
 FIC-41104 controls ICA valve FV-41104 (valve fails close otherwise)
 Run Dry Catalyst feeders (logic 40-1-2)
 Permissive to open vent to PPB KV-51101A (valve fails close otherwise)
 Open HPPN supply (logic 40-2)
 Open Alkyl supply (logic 40-3-5)
 Open Hydrogen supply (logic 40-2)
 Initiate modifier C injection sequence. (logic 40-3-6)
 Permissive for slurry injection (logic 40-15)
 Open ethylene purge to catalyst injection nozzles, FV-42301,42302,42303,42304
 Ethylene Feed Valve FV-41102 closes
WHAT ARE SIGNALS
Signals are various inputs to the KILL LOGICS which are used to define the severity of the
problems in the Cycle Gas Compressor. The logic allows for four different input signals.

 SIGNAL A
 SIGNAL B
 SIGNAL C
 SIGNAL D

The function of these separate signals is to ensure that most desirable type of kill is initiated
depending on the gravity of the mechanical troubles of the Cycle Gas Compressor:

 least disruptive to operations,

 most complete kill and
 lowest probability of compressor or turbine damage
SIGNAL A
 Signal A is an indication from the Cycle Gas Compressor motor contactor that the Cycle Gas
Compressor motor has stopped.

 This typically happens due to a breaker failure, Loss of Run Feedback.

SIGNAL B
 Signal B is based on the low level operational alarms during the running of Cycle Gas
Compressor. In Kobe logic; following parameters are added to generate Signal B.

FIT-44201A/B/C Low Low Seal Gas Supply Flow 90 Nm3/Hr

ACCEPTABLE.
SIGNAL C
 Signal C is based on the mid-level alarms from the Cycle Gas Compressor that indicate that
LIMITED DURATION REDUCED SPEED OPERATION is ACCEPTABLE.
