Access to health services

• Access to health services means "the timely use


of personal health services to achieve the best
health outcomes."1 It requires 3 distinct steps:
– Gaining entry into the health care system (usually
through insurance coverage)
– Accessing a location where needed health care
services are provided (geographic availability)
– Finding a health care provider whom the patient
trusts and can communicate with (personal
relationship)2

• 3. Extinguish the perception that nurses are
not as important as physician decision-
makers.
Provide Leadership Development

• academic and clinical accomplishments,


• ability to foster team building,
• Developing self-esteem and confidence building .

• strategies to develop personal traits (empathy,
listening and innovation),
• personal growth,
• career satisfaction and advancement,
• most importantly, networking
Give nurses a voice
• Involve Nurses in Shared Decision-Making
• establish effective communication and apply emotional
intelligence (EI).
• Using assertive communication and conflict resolution
– Accountability: The mutual commitment to positive patient-
care outcomes.
– Equity: The valuing of every role in the organization.
– Partnership: Nurses’ relationships with one another, the
patient, or other disciplines.
– Ownership: Membership in the nursing profession, clinical
practice, and the work that nurses do as individuals

• Access to health care impacts one's overall physical,
social, and mental health status and quality of life.
– Barriers to health services include:
– High cost of care
– Inadequate or no insurance coverage
– Lack of availability of services
– Lack of culturally competent care
• These barriers to accessing health services lead to:
– Unmet health needs
– Delays in receiving appropriate care
– Inability to get preventive services
– Financial burdens
– Preventable hospitalizations
– Access to care often varies based on race, ethnicity,
socioeconomic status, age, sex, disability status, sexual
orientation, gender identity, and residential location.3

• Nurses' ability to effect change is equally as
important as the technical ability to deliver
safe and effective care. Policy development is
a practical tool for change, and participation in
policy making is a logical extension and
expression of the nursing profession's care
and compassion.
