Technical Management – Case Study Project management and support for ambitious vessel new build project

Background
When any shipping company looks to increase their fleet with new vessels, the process incurs not only long term operational and
strategic commitment, but full quality control and support throughout the undertaking, from start to finish. With four tankers being
built, one ship owner looked to V.Group for help.

Challenge
The entire shipbuilding process can be a lengthy and costly one. Many new ship builds are outsourced to shipyards all around world,
and while that keeps project costs down, it can be a major drawback when it comes to project management.
Our customer commissioned four 113,000 DWT, Large Range 2 product tankers, each of which were being built by two different
shipyards in eastern China. As part of V.Group technical services, SeaTec were drafted in to give experienced new build supervision and
project management for the whole process, from pre-contract support and plan approval, through to delivery and guarantee support.

Solution
As part of the initial process, we provided a highly experienced, multidisciplinary team to complete a Specification & Contract Review.
The team are highly knowledgeable in this area and consist of Naval Architects, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Coating
Engineers, Superintendents and Captain to ensure every detail is covered.
We also arranged for an expert technical negotiation team of Project Manager, Naval Architect, Mechanical Engineer and Electrical
Engineer to help the ship owner with all technical specification negotiation with shipyards.
Once the building process was underway in the shipyards, we provided carefully chosen onsite supervision teams. Made up of a crew
of specialists and a dedicated Project Manager, each has the technical, commercial and operational experience to oversee each project
until completion, while keeping constant contact with the ship owner.
Crew Management – Case Study Full crew management services for major tanker operator

Background
Consistently operating a cost-effective crew management service in an ever-changing industry is a challenge faced by many shipping
operators today. Having taken their crew management in-house, our customer was looking for a trusted outsourced crew management
partner to reduce operating costs and achieve financial success.

Challenge
With upheavals in their sector, our customer, a major oil and chemical tanker operator, needed help to adjust and adapt to changing
market conditions. Having previously taken their crew management in-house, they were looking to rapidly reduce their operating costs
across their fleet. The challenge for V.Group was to help them achieve this without impacting any vessel operations.

Solution
Working closely with the customer, we were able to understand their full requirement and the challenges ahead, at both strategic and
operational levels. Our team then successfully developed a detailed transition plan, proposing that V.Group would deliver crew
management services for 19 vessels in the customer’s fleet.
After our proposal had been agreed and contracts signed, our transition plan was fully implemented within 30 days, and the crew
management of all 19 vessels was successfully taken over by V.Group. This ensured that a flexible and responsive crew management
solution was procured within tight timescales.
Insurance – Case Study First class claims handling for leading cruise liner

Background
The financial risks of owning and running a commercial cruise liner can be huge and specialist insurance is required to ensure maximum
coverage for any eventuality. Fortunately, for one cruise operator, V.Scope insurance team gave them the understanding and skill they
needed to maximise an insurance claim.

Challenge
Following heavy damage from an onboard fire, the owner of a 635ft, 23,149 tonne, 714 passenger cruise liner had not been informed by
their existing insurance broker about the opportunity to recover serious financial losses after the event.
With those losses due to cruise disruption, the cost of returning passengers back to their home countries and the reimbursement of
every cruise ticket sold meant the financial impact heading their way was substantial. Looking to recover as many costs as they could, the
owner looked to our V.Group insurance division, V.Scope, for help and guidance in doing so.

Solution
Being part of V.Group, V.Scope not only understands the wide range of insurance coverage needed for different vessels and different
claims, but also the shipping industry in its entirety. Armed with that information, a team of maritime insurance and claims management
experts were on hand to provide the customer with a deep knowledge and comprehension of insurance terms and conditions.
Simplifying the process and the language used for the customer, as well as offering our experience of handling complex passenger claims,
a thorough V.Scope analysis of the losses in total allowed for more focussed negotiations with the P&I club to start the process of
financial recovery.
