INTRODUCTION

• Chain drive is a way of transmitting

mechanical power from one place to
another.
• It is often used to convey power to the
wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and
motorcycles.
• It is also used in a wide variety of machines
besides vehicles
PARTS OF CHAIN DRIVE

• Pin
• Bushing
• Roller
• Inner link plate
• Outer link plate
ADVANTAGES OF CHAIN DRIVE

• Chain drive is used for power transmission with more efficiency, in belt
drive sometimes slip occurs.
• Chain drive requires less space and it is more compact than belt drive. It
produces less stress on the shaft because the sprockets are lighter than
pulleys.
• Transmit higher power compared to belt drive. Chain drive, the speed ratio is
good as compared to belt drive.
APPLICATIONS

• Bicycles
• Automobiles
• Suspending, raising, lowering loads in material handing equipment.
• Agriculture machinery
• Machinery used in construction
• Hauling applications
SELECTION OF CHAIN DRIVES FOR
AUTOMOBILE APPLICATIONS

• Selection is mostly done using manufactures catalogue.

• The following data should be taken into consideration while selecting roller
chain drives:
• A) Horsepower to be transmitted
• B) RPM of the driving and driven sprocket
• C) Load classification
• D) Space limitations if any
SELECTION OF CHAIN DRIVES FOR
AUTOMOBILE APPLICATIONS

• e) Source of power
• F) Driven machine
• If the pitch center distance and the number of teeth on both driving and
driven sprockets are known, you can use the following formula, tables and
charts to calculate chain lengths.
• There are many manufactures catalogue varying from company to company.
• The standards used are:
• 1) American Series (ANSI Standard)
• 2) British Standards
CALCULATIONS

• 1) Chain speed: S=(P.N.n)/12

• P: Chain Pitch (inch)
• N: Number of teeth of sprocket
• n: Revolutions per minute (rpm)
• 2) Chain Tension: T=(33000.HP)/ S
• S: Chain Speed (ft/min)
• HP: Horsepower to ber transmitted(hp)
CASE STUDY

• A chain drive is used in a special purpose vehicle. The vehicle is run by a 30kW
rotary engine. The efficiency of drive should be 90%. The driving sprocket
rotates at 300rpm. The driven rotates at 100rpm. And a very high torque is to
be transmitted.
• Now, power transmitted = power*efficiency
= 30(0.9)
• = 27kW
For moderate shock conditions the service factor is Ks= 1.4
• Selection of Strands:
• The no of strands depend upon the torque to be transmitted. As we have to
transmit high torque , no of strands is selected as 3 from standard table
• Tooth correction factor:
• This factor is selected on the basis of no of teeth on sprockets. As the no of
teeth are 17, K2=1.
• • Power rating = (Power transmitted * Ks)/(K1*K2)
• = (27*1.4)/(1*3)
• =12.6kW.
• Therefore from power rating table we select chain 16B.
