vSAN 2-Node Configuration Basics

• vSAN 2-node basics

– Both nodes must be in a single physical location
– Only supports FTT=1, mirroring (VM objects are mirrored across two nodes, FTT=1)
– Witness host required as the tiebreaker
– 3 fault domains (Witness host included)
– Uses per-socket vSAN licenses

• Witness host
– Virtual appliance running ESXi (multiple sizes depending on VM count)
– Receives Witness traffic from the two nodes
– Must run outside of cluster and requires Witness traffic separation
▪ https://blogs.vmware.com/virtualblocks/2018/05/16/witness-host-traffic-tagging/
– Can run on a host within the same rack, but not in the 2-node cluster
– More detail in the vSAN 2-node sizing section of the 2-node guide:

Networking for 2-Node Direct Connect
• Direct connection of vSAN and vMotion traffic
between the two nodes vCenter and Witness are
external to the 2-node cluster
• 4x10GbE configuration
– Ports 1 and 2 for HA for management, VM network, and Management and

2-Node Licensing Options for vSAN

• Per-socket vSAN license editions

– Standard
– Advanced – inclusive of Standard, includes RAID5/6 erasure coding and deduplication and
compression
– Enterprise – inclusive of Advanced, includes data-at-rest encryption and stretched cluster

• For more information:

Failure Scenarios
• Disk failure
– Rebuild of the disk will happen after 60 minutes if spare exists

• VM failure
– VM will be marked absent, VM will continue on alternate host via HA

• Node failure
– Quorum established, VMs running on failed node is powered off and powered on from the alternate
node

• Witness host failure

– Quorum established, metadata will be updated when witness host is replaced or repaired

• Loss of both hosts

– Cluster offline, VMs stop running

17
Internal Use -©Confidential

What Else Should You Consider?

• For non-deployed appliances running VxRail OS older than 4.7.100:

– Must re-image VxRail OS to 4.7.100+ (part of standard ProDeploy service offering)

• Net new clusters only – cannot use node removal from an existing VxRail cluster to form the 2-
node configuration
• vCenter
– Must use customer-supplied vCenter to manage

• Size of workloads
– Best practice to run less than 50% of a nodes resource load, so a single node can bear full cluster load in case of a
node failure

• WAN requirements
– RTT between Witness and data nodes up to 500ms
– Bandwidth of at least 1.5Mbps
