 It is a process of exchanging information,


ideas, thoughts, feelings and emotions
through speech, signals, writing, or behavior.
 A sender is known as encoder and receiver is
known as a decoder.
 A sender(encoder) encodes a message using
a medium/channel sends it to the receiver
(decoder) who decodes the message
 Feedback is also a necessary .
The Communication process
 Communication is a process of exchanging
verbal and non verbal messages.
 It is a continuous process.
 This message must be conveyed through some
medium to the recipient.
 It is essential that this message must be
understood by the recipient in same terms as
intended by the sender.
 He must respond within a time frame.
 communication is a two way process and is
incomplete without a feedback from the
recipient to the sender on how well the message
is understood by him.

Functions of Communication

There are mainly four types of functions :-


 Information function
 Command or Instructive function
 Influence or Persuasive function
 Integrative function
Information function:-

 The receiving or giving of information , of all


communication function is known as
information function.
 It provides the information that individual or
group need.
 Transmitting the data to identify and
evaluate choices to make decisions.
Command or control
function:-
 Those who are hierarchically superior in the
family, society or organization, command or
instruct What to do , How to do , when to do.
 Communication acts to control members
behavior .
 Organization have authority hierarchies and
formal guidelines that are required to follow
by employees.
Influence or persuasive:-

 It is to influence of beliefs , attitudes ,


intentions , motivations ,or behaviors.
 To change a person’s behavior towards some
event , idea, object , or other person’s by
words to covey information.
 According to Berlo (1960), the sole purpose of
communication is to influence people.
 Induce people for extension in changing their
behaviour in the desirable direction.
Integrative function:-

 It helps in maintaining individual, societal or


organizational stability and identity.
 Combining and coordinating diverse
elements into whole.
 Integrative function is a communication
theory of cross-cultural adaptation proposed
by Young Yun Kim.
Conclusion:-

 The main purpose of function of


communication is to achieve common
understanding or to create new or better
awareness.
