BLOW MOULDING

ASSIGNMENT 2 (MS II)

Name : NIKHIL SINGH

Roll no. : 47
Year / Semester : III / VI
INTRODUCTION
• Blow moulding is a specific manufacturing process by which hollow plastic parts
are formed and can be joined together.
• The process principle comes from the idea of glassblowing.
• The raw material in this process is a thermoplastic in the form of small pellets or
granules, which is first melted and formed into a hollow tube, called the Parison.
• Parts made from blow molding are plastic, hollow, and thin-walled, such as bottles
and containers that are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Small products
may include bottles for water, liquid soap, while larger containers include plastic
drums, tubs, and storage tanks.
TYPES OF BLOW MOULDING

• Extrusion Blow Moulding

• Injection Blow Moulding

• Stretch Blow Moulding

EXTRUSION BLOW MOULDING

• Inextrusion blow moulding (EBM), Plastic
is melted and extruded into a hollow tube.
• Thisparison is then captured by closing it
into a cooled metal mould.
• Air is then blown into the parison, inflating
it into the shape of the hollow bottle,
container, or part.
• After
the plastic has cooled sufficiently, the
mold is opened and the part is ejected.
Extrusion Blow Moulding
INJECTION BLOW MOULDING

• Theprocess of injection blow

molding (IBM) is used for the
production of hollow glass and plastic
objects in large quantities.
• Inthe IBM process, the polymer is
injection molded onto a core pin; then
the core pin is rotated to a blow
molding station to be inflated and
cooled.
• Typicallyused to make small medical
and single serve bottles.
STRETCH BLOW MOULDING

• It is an extension to Injection Blow

Moulding.
• The process begins with an injection
moulded perform.
• The perform is typically preheated then
stretched in an axial direction and blown
into its final shape by a stretch blow
moulding machine.
ADVANTAGES
• Mould costs are comparatively low due to lower pressure.
• Quick product revisions for increased flexibility.
• Tooling is less expensive than other moulding.
• Well suited for low or high production rates.
DISADVANTAGES

• Products are not biodegradable most times.

• Process and material limitations.
• Extrusion moulding process has longer cooling times than injection
moulding.
APPLICATIONS
Blow moulding is used for manufacturing following :
• Drums
• Glass Bottles
• Garbage Cans
• Fuel Tanks
• Ice Coolers
• Pharmaceutical Bottles etc.
