What is Document Management?
Document Management is a technology that may

include:
• File storage and typing
• Metadata services
• Collaboration services
• Workflow services
• Versioning services
• Access services

DM vs. CM
DM should dominate CM, except:

• DM is files, CM is chunks
• CM fully encompasses authoring
• CM includes publishing

What is Information Management
Information Management is a discipline that:

• Can be called IS, IT, MIS
• Is in charge of the organization’s computer-
based data systems.
• Always runs the network, installs software and
fixes hardware
• Can also include application development and
Web systems/strategy

IM and CM
IM should own CM, except:

• CM includes a bunch of flaky technologies

Documentation and Technical
Writing
• Tech writers first to feel the pinch of massive
information bases
– Technical documentation
– Complex configurations
• Tech writers were the first to feel the pinch of multiple
publications
– Complex configurations
– Multiple delivery platforms
• Many groups have developed sophisticated single-
source systems and an eye toward reusability
• These efforts have too often not made it out of the back
room

Library and Information Science
• Librarians have felt the pinch of organizing information

confront the issue of the Computer Human Interface

– How to convey meaning in an impoverished environment
• Developed robust technologies for manipulation,
storage and display
– PERL and all media applications
– The database and XML file
– The Browser
• The software industry gave CM the power and the
most basic principles of ePublicaiton

The Multimedia Industry
• MM developers were first to feel the pinch of

multiple simultaneous display of digital media
– Digital asset management systems
– The concept of production
– All of our basic digital design principles (the icon,
media controls, button bars, etc.)
– Created the first end to end content management
systems
The Multimedia industry pioneered digital
publication was the first to confront the whole
CM problem
