Industrial safety,
Introduction, Objectives of
safety, Importance of
Safety in an industry
SAFETY
• it is “FREEDOM FROM DANGER OR RISK”.

•TYPES
•Health safety
•Road safety
•Industrial safety
What is industrial safety?
• Its management of all operations and events
within an industry in order to protect its
employees and assets by minimizing hazards,
risks, accidents, and near misses.

• Industrial safety is overseen by federal, state, and

local laws and regulations.

• The Occupational Safety and Health Association

(OSHA) is the primary regulatory body in the
United States dedicated to ensuring industrial
safety.
Industrial safety is primarily a management activity
which is concerned with
• Reducing
• Controlling
• Eliminating
hazards from the industries or industrial units to
overcome the risk of injuries, human death, property ,
environment and economic loss
Industrial safety includes:

• General Safety – General aspects of safety

which are common to all industries
• Occupational Safety and Health – Particularly
associated with the occupation
• Process and Production Safety
• Material Safety
• Workplace Safety – Safety issues directly
related to the workplace setting
• Fire Safety
• Electrical Safety – Arising from the equipment
used
• Building and Structural Safety – Including
installations as per existing building code
• Environmental Safety – Concerns the direct
and indirect environmental impact of the
industry

hazards
Industrial Safety Negligence

Industrial accident causes a great loss to both the Employer

& Employee, that is

• Cost of compensation
• Cost of medical-aid
• Cost of training a new worker
• Cost of the lost time
• Cost of investigation
• Cost of supervision & inspections
• Cost to the Govt. in terms of factory inspectors, & public
health services
• Cost of spoilage of materials
• Cost of the damage of machinery
OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

• To prevent accidents in the plant by reducing the hazard to

minimum.
• To eliminate accident which causes work stoppage and lost of
production.
• To achieve lower workmen’s compensation, insurance rates and
reduce all other direct and indirect costs of accidents.
• To prevent loss of life, permanent disability and the loss of
income of worker by eliminating causes of accidents.

• To evaluate employee’s morale by promoting safe work place and

good working condition
• To educate all members of the organization in continuous state of
safety mindless and to make supervision competent and intensely
safety minded.
Measures to ensure Industrial Safety
1. Safety Policy
recognized, written statement of its commitment to protect the health and safety of
the employees, as well as the surrounding community by the standard practices of
industry.
2. Safety Committee
A safety committee is an organizational group within a workplace with members
from management, the workforce as well as from all departments and staffs.
It shares the responsibility for implementing the company safety program with
management.
3. Safety Engineering
Safety engineering is an engineering discipline which assures that engineered
systems provide acceptable levels of safety.
Guarding of machinery
Material handling equipment
Safety devices
Plan maintenance
General house keeping
4. Safety Education & Training
Provides employers, managers, supervisors, and workers
with Knowledge and skills which are needed to do their work
safely and avoid creating hazards.
5. Role of Government
Compensation
Creating law, rules and regulation for industrial safety
and management.

SAFETY TOOLS & EQUIPMENTS

For those laboring among these potential safety threats in industries, at

least a minimal level of personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary.
Though all PPE should be selected based on the hazards involved, here is a
list of five to wear:

•Hard hats safeguard against falling objects and other flying debris and may
be necessary for industrial and construction environments.

•Face shields and other head gear offer an additional barrier of protection.

•Full-face respirators are available for those exposed to harmful levels of

chemicals or dust in the air.

•Eyewear: Safety glasses help protect eyes from flying objects, radiation
from hot objects, and other vision-threatening dangers
.
• Safety gloves for hand protection when working with sharp
objects, chemicals, sensitive materials, and extreme
temperatures. Gloves should fit well, be chemically compatible
with the materials to be handled, and be suitable for the task
involved. For example, heat-insulated Neoprene gloves offer
good chemical resistance.

• Hearing protection: Earplugs and noise reduction tools are

helpful in industrial facilities, construction, and transportation.
Earmuffs can provide equal pressure distribution and
maximum high-frequency attenuation. Some are crafted for
use in high volume areas such as heavy industry facilities and
jet engine environments.

• Safety footwear so your feet and toes do not get crushed or

damaged.
Safety in Pakistan
Thus safety in industry helps:
(i) Increasing the production rate.
(ii) Reducing the cost of production.
(iii) Reducing damage to machinery and equipment.
(iv) Preventing unwanted suffering and pain to employees of the
organization.
(v) Preventing premature/untimely death of talented workers who may
be an asset to the enterprise and society.
Safety Programme

The basic principles are:-

 To identify potential hazards,

 Assess Risk

 Reduce/eliminate Hazard
• Develop safety policies
• Train and educate
Advantages of Safety Programmes

 Cost Saving

 Increased Productivity

 Moral

 Legal
Terms used in the practice of industrial safety

• Accident: any unplanned event that interrupts or interferes with the

orderly progress of activity. All accidents do not necessarily cause
personal injury.
•  Hazard: any condition that may result in the occurrence of or
contribute to the severity of an accident.
• Accident Prevention Program: A formal organized effort to prevent
accidents from occurring/recurring. Accident prevention program
changes from company to company one process to another process
depending upon the hazards associated with it.
• Injury on Duty: Any injury that occurs in the course of a person’s
employment. i.e injury due to hazards faced because of his occupation.
• First-aid Injury: Any injury on duty that needs only first aid as
treatment.
• Disabling Injury/loss time injury: Any injury that causes disablement beyond
the day of shift. Types of disabling injuries are
1) Permanent Total Disability (PTD)
2) Permanent Partial Disability (PPD)
3) Temporary Total Disability (TTD)
4) Temporary Partial Disability (TPD)
• If a worker is injured during his working hours and he is made unfit to work by
the doctor or first aider, and he is not able to attend his duty till the end of his
shift such injury is disabling injury
• Example of PTD is - Death
• Example of PPD is – losing a body part, say a finger
• Example of TTD is – a person is injured during his work and is unfit to work for
certain days. He resumes his duties after certain days, those days are TTD for
him.
• Example of TPD is – Suppose a worker resumes his duty after certain days.
Suppose he had fracture and he is OK now. Initially for one or two days he
requests his supervisor to give him light work. Those two days are TPD for him.
