Research into Non-invasive Blood

Glucose Monitors
What I did in my project
My project entailed, using various resources, such as the university library and
the internet to find out as much as possible about diabetes and the function of
the pancreas,, then I researched all the current non invasive blood glucose
monitors on the market at the time, from which I discovered that near infrared
technology was not on the horizon.

After researching the non-invasive blood glucose monitors, It seemed almost

ridiculous to still be dependent on intravenous insulin, So, after thinking for a
while, I had a few Ideas such as an insulin pill, or insulin patches similar to
nicotine replacement patches, I then explored how these could be created,
such as by strengthening the di-sulphide bridges between the bases in the
DNA structure of insulin, ( Cytosine 2 and 7 )
And a possible compound that would be capable of passing through the skin.
How diabetes affects those
diagnosed
There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, type one occurs when your
pancreas cannot produce insulin, and type 2 occurs when your pancreas
cannot produce any more insulin mainly due to high calorie diet with little
activity, which is why this type of diabetes is linked to obesity.

With type 2 diabetes, recent studies have shown that the effects can be
reversed in a strictly controlled diet of no more than 400 per day, for about a
month or so.

Other than this, is the way that diabetics deal with there condition, usually it is
either intravenous insulin, to lower blood sugar and maybe eating a sugar rich
snack to increase levels, or just not eating as many sugary sweets and drinks
can also control minor cases.
Possible treatment options
for those with diabetes
Currently there is not much choice in how to treat diabetes, there is one
of 2 surgical options, or a constant supply of insulin to control blood
sugar.

The first surgical method, is a pancreas transplant, but there is a high

chance of rejection and immuno-suppressants must be taken, secondly
there is an islets of Langerhans transplant, ( which is the part of the
pancreas that produces the insulin) this has a lower rejection rate but at
the moment, as with the whole pancreas transplant they must be from
cadaveric sources.

In the future there could be other treatment paths, such as stem cells,
whereby you could grow your own organs and implant them with no
chance of rejection as they would be your own, or porcine islets of
Langerhans, which are currently in research.
