Light and its relationship to art

Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

I chose this painting because its
complexity in colors and the different
approach to painting infrastructure. The
sky is very interesting due to its complex
colors and swirling patterns. The yellow
and blue mixes to a mild yellowish green
that helps the sky unique and not plain
(just blue/black). The colors in general
works really well together.
Frequency, amplitude, and period in relationship to light
• Frequency is often connected to the colors projected. Some colors fall
on the spectrum with lower frequency such as violet, and others on
the high end of the spectrum, which results in red.
• Amplitude is connected to the intensity of the light, or the brightness
of the light. It relates to the amplitude in math where higher
amplitudes will appear steeper compared to a lower amplitude.
• Period is related to frequency where period measures how long a
cycle takes place and it is measured in seconds.
What types of waves are light waves?
• Light is a transverse wave due to the vibration of the wave being
perpendicular to the propagation of the wave (directions the waves
travel.)
• Light is also a electromagnetic wave. Electromagnetic waves are the
combination of electric and magnetic waves vibrating in the
perpendicular direction, making electromagnetic waves transverse
waves in nature.
How does color wheel, spectrum of light, shadows apply

• the color wheel is used to determine and create new colors by mixing
to create complex colors like show in the painting. The sky included
many shades of green, yellow and blue.
• The spectrum of light is used in the painting as the painting is mostly
yellow and orange, which falls on the higher end of the spectrum and
colors such as blue and dark blue falls on the lower mid of the
spectrum.
• Shadows from when the light is obstructed from projected on the
intended object, resulting in a black cast of the object blocking it.
How does color absorption, reflection,
complementary colors apply?
• Color absorption occurs when an object absorbs any color besides
one resulting in the object appearing to be that color.
• Reflection which occurs when the object absorbs all color besides the
one being reflected, causing the object to appear in that color.
• Complementary colors are colors which mixed with their compliment,
will create a neutral gray or black color.
How does Reflection, refraction, diffraction
apply to light seen in your painting?
• Reflection is absent in the painting because the painting is not a
realistic painting. The only reflection is the reflection of color from the
pigments
• Refraction is not apparent in the painting because it is not based on a
realistic scenario.
• Diffraction does not occur in this painting
Speed, and medium of the light wave
compared to sound waves
• Sound waves are disturbances in the air which exists only in an
environment with air. This makes it slower too due to the medium of
sound waves, such as metals, air, and water all being sources that can
spread soundwaves.
• Light waves travel much faster in a vacuumed space, it is also a
particle and a wave, or electromagnetic waves. The medium also
affects the speed, such as air.
Light is a wave or particle?
• Light can be both a wave and particle
• Light is a particle when shined on certain metal, called quanta
• Light acts like a wave due to interference waves created when shined
at a different beam of light, which behaves like a wave.
