½ R’C½’ oday we will dis uss for our
Sunday S hool Lesson, the reason for the Great
flood, those who were spared from the flood, the
ark itself, and oah·s sin following the Great
flood. Let us study these fa ts.
½. RAS’ F’R FL’’.

1. Wrong marriage. Read Genesis 62. You will noti e the

words, ´they hose.µ hey hose their own wives. his was
one of the reasons for the wrath of God being poured out
upon the world. As hildren of God, we have no right to
hoose our own mates. We are to marry the one that God
hose for us.

2. ’pen sin. Read Genesis 6a.

3. vil thoughts and evil minds. See Genesis 6b.

4. he above points seem to imply that these folks had

mu h knowledge, mu h formal edu ation, mu h human
wisdom, and et . ½t was however, without God and would
ertainly apply to this generation also.

. hey were orrupt. oti e Genesis 611a. he

word ´ orruptµ seems to imply ´rotten.µ ½n other words, this
probably in ludes immorality, sex sin, and all forms of
lewdness and orruption.

6. Violen e. See Genesis 611b. Compare this with our day.

½½. ’S SPAR FR’M FL’’.

1. no h. hough no h was not alive when the flood ame (that is, he was not on
earth when the flood ame), nevertheless, he was spared from the flood. ½t was
said about oah that he walked with God, and it was said about no h that he
walked with God. ½sn·t it interesting that the only two spared from the flood were
those who walked with God? no h was raptured, translated, or arried a ross. ½n
other words, he did not die. e was alled out from the world before the flood.

2. no h·s son, Methuselah. ½t is a very interesting thing that he was spared. God
not only seems to spare people who live righteous lives themselves, but e also
seems to favor their hildren. he word ´Methuselahµ means ´when he is gone, it
shall be sent.µ ot only did God bless no h be ause he walked with im, but e
blessed his son, Methuselah. Methuselah did not see the flood. As long as he
lived, the flood did not take pla e. he great flood had to wait until after he
died. his was be ause his father walked with God.

½t is interesting also to note that no h started walking with God after his son,
Methuselah, was born. Genesis 22a, ´And no h walked with God after he begat
Methuselah.µ Certainly if a person ever needs to walk with God, it is as a parent.
½½. ’S SPAR FR’M FL’’.
3. oah. Just as no h was spared from
the flood by being alled out, oah was
spared by being preserved through the great
flood. his is a type of the Rapture. he
Great flood typifies the Great ribulation
period. no h symbolizes the Christian alled
out before the ribulation. oah symbolizes
the Jewish nation, preserved through the
ribulation period. oah was spared from
the flood be ause he walked with God.

4. oah·s family. As has been said before, it

pays to have a Christian dad and mom. he
greatest gift one an give his hildren is a
Christian heritage. ½t is noteworthy that
oah·s three sons, am, Shem and Japheth,
fathered the people of the world. Shem is the
father of the Jewish ra e; Japheth, the great
white Gentile ra e; and ham, the dark
ra e. All peoples of the world ame from one
of these three sons.
½½½. ARK.
Keep in mind as we make this study that the ark represents Jesus Christ. Let us
noti e the omparisons between the ark (whi h was the safety for oah and his
family) and Christ (our safety).

1. ½t was made of wood. See Genesis 614a. ’ur safety also omes from wood³
that is, the ross.

2. ½t was pit hed with pit h. Study Genesis 614b. he word ´pit hµ means ´the
blood of a tree.µ his word is also translated ´atonementµ in other pla es in the
Bible. Just as the ark was kept together by the blood of a tree, even so you and ½
are kept se ure by the blood of the tree³that is, the blood of Calvary.

3. oti e the size of the ark in verse 1. Let us dis over the exa t measurement of
the ark by knowing about the ubit.

4. You will noti e there was only one window in the ark, and it was at the top. God
did not want the people to look down; e wanted them to look up. What a blessed
pi ture this is for us! here is always optimism by looking up and pessimism by
looking down. ½f one looks down to sorrow, hearta hes, burden, temptation, and
trials of this world, he will be ome dis ouraged. ½f one looks up through God·s
window to the heavens and keeps his eyes upon Christ, he will be en ouraged.
½½½. ARK.
. You will noti e there was only one door. xamine Genesis 616b. here is only
one door to our ark, and that is the ross. When a person puts his faith in Christ, he
is saved.
6. oti e the door was in the side. See Genesis 616. here was a wound in the
side of the ark. he wounded side of Christ opened the way for you and me to be
saved.

7. here were three stories to the ark. Read Genesis 616 . here are three stories
to our salvation. God is a triune God³God the Father, God the Son, and God the
oly Spirit

8. oti e that oah had to hoose to enter the ark. God did not for e him in. See
Genesis 71, 7. ½t was a matter of the will. oah walked in; God invited him, but e
did not for e him.

9. God shut him in. oti e Genesis 716. ere we have se urity. ½t was oah·s own
will that brought him in. God provided the se urity; God invited oah in. oah
entered on his own volition, and then God shut him in. here is the se urity of the
believer. You will noti e that God did not put eight nails on the outside of the ark
and say, ´old on for 140 days, and ½ will spare you.µ o, God simply said, ´Come
in, and ½ will prote t you.µ
½V. ’A·S S½ . Read Genesis 920-23
1. he best Christian had better wat h
out! oah was the greatest Christian in the
whole world. e was righteous enough to be
spared from the Great flood, and yet he fell into
sin.
2. People from the best Christian homes had
better wat h out! oah·s son fell into sin. is
dad was the greatest man in the world, and yet
he fell into sin. ½t does not matter what kind of
homes we are from; we must be areful all the
time and lean upon God for help and strength
and deliveran e from temptation.

3. We an fall into sin at the best times. oah

had just been spared from a terrible
atastrophe. e had just stood the test. o
doubt he let his guard down, and sin ame!

4. Sin often omes after our greatest

vi tories. We need to be very areful lest we, at
times of great vi tory, are tempted. ’ur weakest
moments sometimes are immediately following
our greatest moments.
