RECALLING NARRATIVE TEXT

THROUGH DIGITAL APPLICATION

Aims of the Research :


1. To describe how the implementation of digital
application in recalling Narrative text
2. To describe students’ responses in recalling
Narrative text through digital application.
GRAND THEORY:
1. Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension is the process of constructing meaning through the
dynamic interaction among: (1) the reader’s existing knowledge; (2) the
information suggested by the text being read; and (3) the context (Kimberly.
2014).

2. Narrative Text
Narrative is a text that tells a story and, in doing so, entertains the audience. It
has character, setting, and action. The characters, the setting, and the problem of
the Narrative are usually introduced in the beginning. The problem reaches its
high point in the middle. The ending resolves the problem (Anderson, 2003).

3. Recalling
Recall is mentally or recite the highlights of what students have read, underline
the keyword or phrases in each section and summarize the material in students
own word (Paul, 2013).

4. Instructional Media
Instructional media defined as anything used to send information from the
senders to the receiver to arise learner scuriousity and encourage them to learn.
Sadiman, et al (1986) cited by (Sukmahidayanti, 2015)

5. Canva Application
Canva is a simple application to use graphic design tool. It allows to make
images and design for the web or print with enough easy to use features and
functionally (Lexie, 2017).
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This research was categorized into classroom action research.
According to Kemmis and McTaggart (2002: 24) cited in Siska
(2014) action research is a form of collective self-reflection enquiry
undertaken by participant in social situation in order to improve the
rationality and justice of their own social or educational practices, as
well as their understanding of these practices and the situation in
which these practice are carried out.
action research is systematic procedures used by teachers (or
individuals in an educational setting) to gather quantitative and
qualitative data to address improvements in their educational setting,
their teaching and learning of their students.
There are four steps in doing classroom action research, they are:
1. Planning
2. Action
3. Observation
4. Reflection
The Setting and Participant of Study
The study was conducted at SMAN 1 Pacet. The school is located at Jl.
Hanjawar – Pacet, Sukanagalih, Pacet, Cibadak, Cianjur, Kabupaten Cianjur,
Jawa Barat 43253. The researcher selected the first year of X Science Class 1 (
X MIPA 1) which consisted of 25 students in the 2019/2020 academic years
as the participants of the study.
DATA COLLECTION
This research implemented three instruments, namely test, observation
and questionnaire. Each instrument is explained below.
1. Test
The test used to test student ability in reading comprehension, twenty five
students of X MIPA 1 was conducted the pre and post-test. Pre -test
conducted in second meeting of cycle 1 on 11th March, 2020 and the post
test conducted in the second meeting of cycle 2 on 1st April, 2020. The
test used to answer the first research question of this research.
2. Observation
The researcher observed 25 students of X MIPA 1. The observation was
conducted in 4 meetings.
3. Questionnaire
The researcher applied 20 items of questionnaire order to get data about
the implementation and students respond of Canva application as media
for recalling Narrative text. The questions of questionnaires used Bahasa.
So, the participants were also answered by using Bahasa. The researcher
shared link of questionnaire form. Then, the students wrote the answers
individually.
FINDING AND DISCUSSION
Data Obtained from Test 1 and 2
Test was given on 11th March, 2020. It was given conducted in the
second meeting of cycle 1. After giving the treatment in the first
meeting of cycle 1. The researcher gave test 1 to students. The
students were defined into five groups consists of five students,
then, the researcher asked students to recall the Narrative text by
using Canva application.
From the calculation, the researcher found the lowest score in test
1 was 69. There were five students got that score, while the
highest score was 84 who got by five students too.

showed that several students passed the minimum score/KKM.


From 25 students, 60% could pass the minimum score. From the
number of students’ achievement above, it indicated that the
students’ reading skill was quite good
For scoring 2, the researcher did the same procedure with the
previous test. The researcher defined students into 12 groups
each group consist of 2 or 3 students. The researcher found
the lowest score in test 2 was 72 who got by four students
which the point increased three point from the test 1. In the
test 2, the highest score was 87 it increased two points. It was
got by two students.

The result of test 2 also showed good score in the number of


students’ achievement. The table showed several students who
passed the minimum score/KKM. It means from 25 students,
72% could pass the minimum score. From the number of
students’ achievement above, it indicated that the students
reading skill was getting better that the previous cycle. It means
that the students’ improvement of reading skill on recalling
Narrative test improved in this cycle.
The Result of Observation
Most of students paid attention in classroom activity but several students
did not pay attention. sometimes they looked busy talking with their own
activities. The students attitude was positive, but sometimes they did not
pay attention to the teacher, only several students were active in
responding and answering teacher’s question.

Based on the figure above, showed that the percentage of each indicators
was improved in each cycle. The students were enthusiastic when they got
the new material. They also enjoyed recalling Narrative text through Canva
as digital application because the media easy to use and help them in
express their idea and make them not bored in learning process.

The Result of Questionnaire


The result of questionnaire the students were enthusiastic and enjoyed
learning reading Narrative text, the students were enthusiast in Canva
application as their digital media in recalling Narrative text. It means that
application give them benefits for reading comprehension on recalling
Narrative text. Thus, Canva application is suitable for students in reading
comprehension on recalling Narrative text
CONCLUSION
Based on the finding about the implementation of digital application in recalling
Narrative text. It showed that the students’ reading skill on recalling Narrative text at
the tenth grade (X MIPA 1) of SMA Negeri 1 Pacet improves through Canva application
as digital application. It can be seen from the result of students’ test that had been
done in cycle 1 and cycle 2, the improvement of the students’ reading skill can be seen
from the mean score of each test. The mean score of test 1 in cycle 1 was 75.4 and the
mean score of test 2 was 78.64. It means that there were an improvement from test 1
and test2. Moreover, the highest score of test 1 was 84 and test 2 was 87, for the
lowest score of test 1 was 69 and test 2 was 72. It can be stated that recalling
Narrative text through digital application can improved students’ reading skill. It also
supported by the result of questionnaire and observation.
Students’ responses in recalling Narrative text through digital application. It showed that
students showed the positive responses toward recalling Narrative text through digital
application, the digital application that used in this research is Canva application as media for
students in recalling Narrative text. There are significant improvement in teaching and
learning process. on recalling Narrative text through digital application the students learn
English in enjoyable and fun way. It improves their motivation, curiosity and creativity. The
application are practicality and easiness to use, increasing students’ enthusiasm, curiosity,
motivation and creativity in recalling Narrative text.
The response of students’ curiosity in reading comprehension on recalling Narrative text
trough digital application could be seen from the observation conducted by the researcher
during the teaching learning process to know students’ response to the application with 5
indicators related to recalling Narrative text through digital application. Students showed
good enough in active joining the class and gave positive response about recalling Narrative
text through digital application. Based on the passage above, it can be concluded that
recalling Narrative text through digital application can significantly improve the student’s
reading skill.
