AND POLITICS
Importance of Understanding Culture,
Society and Politics

Culture, society and politics are essentials in


understanding human behavior and social groups.

It helps people to know how to interact with others


both within and outside of their own society and culture

By understanding the idea of culture, society and


politics, we learn more about our country, and we are
able to come up with solutions to existing problems.
Culture

• refers to the knowledge,


language, values, customs, and
physical objects that are
passed from generation to
generation among members of
a group.
Culture
• encompasses religion,
food, what we wear, how
we wear it, our language,
marriage, music, what we
believe is right or wrong,
how we sit at the table,
how we greet visitors, how
we behave with loved ones.
Society
• Is generally defined as an
organized group or groups
of interdependent people
who shares a common
territory, language,
culture and who act
together for collected
survival and well being.
Politics
• refers to the theory,
art, and practice of
government.
• It involves making
decisions that apply to
group of members
• Each person interacts meaningfully
with one another as a member of
society. Culture encompasses the
meaningful processes and products
of these social interactions. People
interact in society as individuals
and as groups with duties and
privileges. In the exercise of duties
and privileges, a person as a
member of society engages in
political activities.
SOCIAL DIFFERENCES

• The differences among the


individuals on the basis of
social characteristics and
qualities are known as social
differences. Social differences
are the complex differences
and they include class, race,
culture, age, ability, gender,
socioeconomic class, political
identity, religion, etc.
Gender
• According to WHO (2013), gender
“refers to the socially constructed
roles, behavior, activities, and
attributes that a given society
considers appropriate for men and
women”. Unlike sex which refers to
the biological characteristics of
human such as male or female.
• gender categories are more varied,
accommodating identities such as
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender
and intersex (LGBTQI), among others.
Socioeconomic Class
• The concept of
socioeconomic class varies
between societies as the
ideas associated with being
poor or rich based on the
collective experiences of
individuals.
In the Philippines , three types
are identified
Socioeconomic Class
• 1. upper- are the most productive
in terms of resource generation
and oftentimes very successful in
their field of interests and
endeavors, be it in agriculture,
industry, business or government.
Socioeconomic Class
• 2. middle- is composed of small business and
industry operators mostly owners and
managers, professionals, office workers,
Filipino overseas workers and farm owners
with income that is average enough to provide
comfortable and decent living.
• 3. lower- farm employees, skilled and unskilled
artisans, service workers, and others who may
be unemployed or underemployed.
Religion
• the belief in and worship of a superhuman
controlling power, especially a personal God
or gods.
Nationality
• Is the identity that is tied to being part of a
nation or country. Nationality can be
acquired by being born in a country or by the
process of legal applications called
naturalization
Ethnicity
• An ethnic group; a social group that shares a
common and distinctive culture, religion,
language, specific environments, traditions
and histories

• Negrito Groups: Agta, Ati, Ayta


• Mangyan: Alangan, Bangon, Buhid, Hanunoo,
Iraya, Ratagnon, Tadyawan, Tawbuid
Political Identities

• Political identity as a social category refers to the set


of attitudes and practices that an individuals adheres
to in relation to the political systems and actors
within his or her society.
• Political parties in the Philippines such as Ang Ladlad,
a party that negotiates for the welfare of the LGBTQI
community and Kabataan, a party that promotes
youth empowerment, are examples of how sectors in
our society use their identities as political vehicles to
negotiate their needs.

c. ethnicity

Observe the people inside the school campus.
The following questions serve as observation
guide:
1. What sort of people goes to the school campus?
2. What sort of interaction takes place between
people at different categories ( e.g. gender and
age)?
