What is lubrication ?
Lubrication is the process or technique of using a
lubricant to reduce friction and wear and tear in a
contact between two surfaces.
Engine Lubrication System
Lubricating system is a mechanical system
of lubricating internal combustion engines
in which a Pump forces oil into the engine
bearings.

• Oil Sump
• Engine Oil Filter
• Piston Cooling Nozzles
• Oil pump
• The Oil Galleries
• Oil Cooler
• The Oil Pressure Indicator/Light
Oil Sump

• An Oil Pan / Sump is just a bowl-shaped reservoir.


• It stores the engine oil and then circulates it within the engine.
• Oil sump sits below the crankcase.
• Its stores the engine oil when the engine is not running.
• It is located at the bottom of the engine in order to collect engine
oil.
• The oil returns to the sump by pressure/gravity when the engine is
not in use.
Engine Oil Filter

• An oil filter is a filter designed to remove contaminants


from engine oil, transmission oil, lubricating oil,
or hydraulic oil. 
• Oil filters are used in many different types of hydraulic
machinery.
•  A chief use of the oil filter is in internal-combustion
engines  in on- and off-road motor vehicles, light aircraft,
and various naval vessels
Piston Cooling Nozzles

• Piston cooling nozzles/jets play several crucial roles in the power


cylinder of an internal combustion engine
• Primarily, they help with the thermal management of the piston
and provide lubrication to the cylinder liner and the piston’s wrist
pin
The Oil Galleries

• To get better performance and longer engine life, it is


essential that the engine oil quickly reaches the moving
parts of the engine
• For this purpose, manufacturers provide oil galleries within
the engine
• The Oil Galleries are nothing but series of interconnected
passages which supply the oil to the remotest parts of the
engine
Oil pump

• An Oil Pump is a device which helps to circulate the


lubricant oil to all the moving parts inside the engine.
• These parts include crankshaft & camshaft bearings as
well as valve lifters. It is generally located at the bottom
of the crankcase, close to the oil sump
Oil Cooler

• The Oil Cooler is a device which works just like a


radiator. It cools down the engine oil which
becomes very hot.
• Oil cooler transfers the heat from the engine oil to
the engine coolant through its fins
• , most vehicles use oil cooler system for better
engine performance.
Working of engine lubrication system

• The job of the lubrication system is to


distribute oil to the moving parts to
reduce friction between surfaces which
rub against each other
• An oil pump is located on the bottom of
the engine. The pump is driven by a
worm gear off the main exhaust valve
cam shaft.
• The oil is pumped to the top of the engine, at
the right, inside a feed line. Small holes in the
feed line allow the oil to drip inside the
crankcase.
• We have removed the fuel system and peeled
back the covering of the crankcase to see inside.
• The oil drips onto the pistons as they move in
the cylinders, lubricating the surface between
the piston and cylinder.
• The oil then runs down inside the crankcase
to the main bearings holding the crankshaft.
Oil is picked up and splashed onto the
bearings to lubricate these surfaces.
• Along the outside of the bottom of the
crankcase is a collection tube which gathers
up the used oil and returns it to the oil
pump to be circulated again
