THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM I

Definition of Tourism

 The sum of the phenomena and relationships arising from the travel
and stay of non residents, in so far as they do not lead to permanent
residence and are not connected to any earning activity. - Prof.
Hunziker and Krapf of Berne University

 The temporary short-term movement of people (less than a year) to


destinations outside the places where they normally live and work,
as well as their activities during their stay at these destinations. –
Tourism Society in Britain
The Defining Factors of Tourism

 Length of Stay
• “ For less than a year” - you have to be intending to come home again
• e.g: the visit is temporary and short term

Purpose of visit
• e.g: visiting friends and relatives, conventions, meetings, business, outdoor
recreation, entertainment

Distance travelled
•outside the usual environment;
NOTE that:

All tourism should have some travel, but


not all travel is tourism.
NOTE that:

• Travel comprises all journeys from one place to another. It


• includes all journeys made by people who enter a country for
• leisure, to work, reside, study or who just pass through a country
• without stopping.

 Tourists are away from home

Tourist is a person who travels to destinations


outside his/her residence and working place,
and stays for at least 24 hours, for the purpose
of leisure or business.

Excursionist is a temporary visitor staying less


than 24 hours in the destination visited and
not making overnight stay, for the purpose of
leisure or business.
Examples:

1. A Canadian resident takes a short trip to


the USA without staying overnight.

2. A Hongkong resident goes to Macau to visit


his friends and relatives for 1 week.

3. A Malaysian resident takes a trip to


Singapore without staying overnight.
Types of Tourism

Domestic International
Tourism between countries.
Tourism within a
country by people who A. Inbound – tourists leaving their country of origin to
live in that country. travel to another country
B. Outbound – tourists entering a country from their
country of origin
Examples:

Inbound : When Malaysian tourist arrive in the


Philippines for a business meeting.

Outbound: When Hongkong residents on


holiday from Hongkong to Paris.

2. A wealthy Filipino young lady on a


month long trip to visit relatives in
England.

3. A French businessman from France


coming to Philippines for a month trying
to obtain new orders for table wine.
Activity:

• The Ayanos are a Filipino couple who are in Malaysia on a two-week tour.
They’ve spent some more time in Sabah and now they’re in Malacca, touring
around and seeing the historical sights and beaches. They like to stay in
comfortable hotels. In a couple of days they will travel to Kuala Lumpur to
catch their return flight home to Philippines.

• In pairs, identify the type of tourism, if its an International tourism, write


also the type of IT and decide what it is specifically about people like the
Ayanos that make us think of them as tourists.
