MEANING AND
HISTORY OF
BASKETBALL
- Basketball is a team sport in which two teams
of five active players each try to score points
against one another by propelling a ball through
a 10 feet (3m) high hoop (the goal) under
organized rules. Basketball is one of the most
popular and widely viewed sports in the world.
HISTORY:
 - Dr. James Naismith is known world- wide as the
inventor of basketball. The concept of basketball
was born from his school days in the area where he
played a simple child’s game known as DUCK-
ON-A-ROCK outside his one-room schoolhouse.
The game involved attempting to knock a “ DUCK
“ off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock
at it.

EQUIPMENT:
COURT
The only essential equipment in basketball is
the basketball and the court: a flat, rectangular
surface with baskets at opposite ends.
Competitive levels require the use of more
equipment such as clocks, scoresheets,
scoreboard(s), and the like.
The court is rectangular in shape, which
measures 25m. x 18 m. It should flat
surface, rubberized colored paint for
outdoor court and wooden for indoor court.
BACKBOARD AND BASKET

down type , indicating the time in seconds.
The signal of the device should
automatically sound with a very loud
signal when it reaches “zero”.
SCORESHEET
a scoresheet is used by
the official scorer for
recording games.
PLAYER FOUL MARKER
the player foul marker is used for
indicating the number of fouls
committed by a player. For games
played in four periods of 12 minutes
they shall be numbered 1-6 (1-5 in
black, 6 in red)
TEAM FOUL INDICATOR
theme foul indicators are suitable
devices to indicate the number of
team fouls ( 8 for games of 2x20
minutes and 5 for games of 4x12
minutes)
SCOREBOARD
The scoreboard indicate the
time remaining in a period as
prescribed by the clock.
THE DIFFERENT
TEAM SHALL
CONSIST
 Not more than 10 members for games in 2
halves of 20 minutes.
 Not more than 12 teams for games played 4
periods of 12 minutes of for tournaments in
which a team has to play more than 3 games.
 A coach and if team wishes, an assistant coach.
 A maximum of 5 team followers with special
responsibilities; e.g. manager, doctor, physiotherapist,
statistican, interpreter.
PLAYERS AND
SUBSTITUTES
 POINT GUARD usually the fastest player on the team,
organizes the team’s offense by controlling the ball and making
sure that it gets to the right player at the right time.
 SHOOTING GUARD creates a high volume of shots on
offense; guards the opponents best perimeter player on defense.
 SMALL FORWARD often primarily responsible for scoring
points via cuts to the basket and dribble penetration.
 POWER FORWARD plays offensively often with his back to
the basket
 CENTER uses size to score ( on offense ), to protect the
basket closely ( on defense ) or to rebound.

DRIBBLING
when a player repeatedly pushes , pats ,
taps, or bats the ball toward the floor
with one hand to cause the ball to bounce
back up to either of his hands , used to
advance the ball or keep control of it.
PASSING
the player who's passes the ball to a
teammate. Used to start plays , move the
ball downcourt, keep it away from the
defenders and get it to a shoulder.
SHOOTING
A player who
takes a shoot at
the basket.

AND
REBOUNDING
The use of a defender’s
body position to illegally
prevent an opponents
