HISTORY
Of
CLOTHING
Clothing refers to the article that people wear to cover their body such as dresses, trousers, shirts,
skirts etc. Clothing is also known as clothes, apparel and attire. Scientists are still debating when
people started wearing clothes. Estimates by various experts have ranged from 40,000 to 3
million years ago. Some more recent studies involving the evolution of body lice have implied a
more recent development with some indicating a development of around 170,000 years ago and
others indicating as little as 40,000. No single estimate is widely accepted.
Clothing during

Indus Valley
Civilization
Indus Valley Civilization was a Bronze Age civilisation in the northwestern regions of South Asia, lasting
from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE, and in its mature form from 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE. The Indus valley civilization is also
known as the Harappan Civilization. History of clothing in the Indian subcontinent can be traced to the
Indus Valley Civilization or earlier. Indians have mainly worn clothing made up of locally grown cotton. India was one
of the first places where cotton was cultivated and used even as early as 2500 BCE during the Harappan era.
The remnants of the ancient Indian clothing can be found in the figurines discovered from the sites near the
Indus Valley Civilisation, the rock-cut sculptures, the cave paintings, and human art forms found in temples and
monuments. From the sculptured figures it can be seen that the clothing of men and women from that era consisted of
two pieces of cloth-one resembling a dhoti, covering the lower part, and the other worn over the left shoulder and under
the right arm. Men had long hair designed differently. Women wore a fan shaped headdress covering their hair. The
discovery of a large number of spindles showed that they knew weaving and spinning. Similarly it was concluded, by
the discovery of needles and buttons, that the people of this age knew the art of stitching. Jewellery in indus valley
civilization is most amongst the most commonly found relics and artifacts of harrapan society the traditional art of india
recommends a richness and perfusion in the jewelry adorned by both men and women.
The Indus Valley Civilization may have met its demise due to invasion as Indo-European tribe, called
the Aryans, suddenly overwhelmed and conquered the Indus River Valley.
