THE EFFECTS OF PART TIME

JOB TO THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR
HIGH SCHOOL IN LICEO DE
CAGAYAN UNIVERSITY MAIN
AND RNP CAMPUS
CHAPTER 1

THE
PROBLEM
AND
ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION

The effects of part-time job to the academic

performance of senior high school students in Liceo de
Cagayan University is the subject of this study. Although
it is widely recognized that many students are employed
part-time out of school hours, little is known about the
consequences of such employment. It is not unusual for a
senior high school student to have a part-time job. Most
of the student employees working at fast food
restaurants, grocery stores, and retail stores. A part-time
contract is a form of employment that carries fewer hours
per week than a full-time job. They work in shifts. The
shifts are often rotational. Workers are considered to be
part-time if they commonly work fewer than 30 hours per
week.
Some authors, such as Warren, LePore and
Mare (2000), argue that studies have typically
treated educational careers and occupational
careers as mutually exclusive and that only
recently attention has been garnered toward
examining the relationship between students
who work and their educational achievements.
Such research suggests that there is a high level
of interaction between earning and learning.
In the last several decades, part time job
among high school students has increased
greatly. Although students were working in
1950, twice as many are likely to work today
(Singh, 1998). Indeed, Simmons Market
Research Bureau (1992) reported that more
than 5 million children between the ages of 12
and 17 are presently working.
Boshoven (n.d) experts agreed that students
who work more than 15 to 20 hours per week
often experience decreased school success, which
can lead to dropping out entirely. Working long
hours can also limit opportunities to build
friendships and explore interests that enhance
intellectual and emotional development.

According to Furr & Elling, (2002) as more

students are employed, they face having to
balance their academic requirements,
extracurricular activities, and employment
responsibilities to maintain their lifestyle.
Singh et al. (2007) report that those
students who were employed after school
demonstrated not only less motivation in their
classes but lower grades as well. Indeed, the more
hours students worked, the lower their motivation
and engagement would be. The results for the
several tests conducted by Singh et al. all showed
that those students who have never worked were
more engaged in their academic endeavors,
whether this was manifested in motivation or effort.
Finally, Singh et al. also found that the students
who work did not self-report lower grades, but they
had lower academic aspirations than those that
have never worked an after-school job.
Much of the past research we have reviewed
has found that work intensity played an integral
role for the students who are engage in part-time
job. Thus, in our study we wanted to understand
and have the knowledge pertaining to the said
problem.

In this paper it is important as student that

working a part-time job will make the student learn
their responsibility and can also reinforce what they
are learning. It is useful to evaluate the types of jobs
in which those students are involved in order to
know the impact to their academic performance.
Statement of the Problem

This problem focuses on the effects of part time

job among senior high students.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the

following

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of;

1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 General Average
2. What are the effects of part-time jobs to the
academic performance of the respondents?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the

part-time job to the academic performance of
the respondents?
Significance of the Study

The result of the proposed study

will give the students the knowledge
and will provide a basis of their
awareness and better understanding
of how their current work affect
their academic performance.
Teachers. It will also serve awareness to the
teachers that they will further understand to the rationale
or common cause on why working students find it
difficult to balance study and work.

Future Researchers. They may be able to find

findings of the study for further research and
investigation particularly related to the academic
performance of working.

Parents. It is important to the parents, especially to

those parents who work outside for they will be able to
the know the effects it may bring on having a son or
daughter having a part-time job.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY
Research Setting
This study will be administered in both
Main and RNP campus of Liceo de Cagayan
University. Both campuses are in a city type area
and surrounded with commercial buildings. The
main campus of Liceo de Cagayan University is
situated near the Cagayan de Oro River and La
Castilla in Barangay Kauswagan. The RNP
Boulevard, Kauswagan is located at Carmen,
Cagayan de Oro City. The Liceo de Cagayan
University is a non-sectarian university in
Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.
Research Design

The method used in this study is

descriptive. According to Gall7 Borg
(2007) the objective of descriptive
research is to describe a certain event and
its properties. It aims to know the effects
of the part time job to the academic
performance of Senior High School in
Liceo de Cagayan University from both
the RNP and the Main campus.
Respondents and Sampling Procedure

The researcher will use purposive sampling to

determine the number of respondents. These parameters
will be use in the selection of respondents. We consider
2,000 Senior high school students assuming that 30% of
the populations are working students, which would
give us a population of (600). The researchers believe
that 50% of those working students can represent and
answer the survey forms and would give us a total 300
respondents regardless of their gender. A central issue
from this review was the apparent ambiguity
concerning the effects of part-time job to the academic
performance of students in Liceo de Cagayan
University.
Research Instruments

The researcher uses survey

questionnaires from
likertscalequestionnaires that were given
to the respondents who participated in
this study. The questionnaire sets
purposively to construct a profiling and
determine the respondents part-time job
issue and the number of students who
experience the part-time job.
Validity and Reliability of the Instruments

The researchers have questionnaire use to

assess the personal information of the respondents. It
has two parts the first one will ask about their age,
gender, average and records of their tardiness and
absences. The second part talks about their part-time
job and their shifts. Consent were also made to
ensure the willingness of the respondents in
answering the survey forms. These questionnaires
will help us assessing the effects of part-time job to
the academic performance of Senior High School
students in Liceo de Cagayan University RNP and
Main Campus.
Research Protocol

To ensure the quality and reliability of research

findings, the Senior High School student
researchers shall observe the following
