• Remote Sensing
• Seismic Geomorphology
• Spline Models
• Some practical examples
• Applications
• Conclusion
INTRODUCTION
• is the study of landforms and landscapes, including the
description.

• seeks to identify the regularities among landforms and

what processes lead to patterns.

• attempts to explain the origin of all of the earth’s landforms, such

as mountains, lakes, etc.

• Geomorphology includes
a)    Endogenic Processes
b)    Exogenic Systems
HISTORY
• Recent History of Geomorphology

• 1930 – 1960 Quantitative study of morphology

• 1960 – 1970 Quantitative study of process

Climatic geomorphology

• 1980’s Geomorphic modelling

• 1990’s Applied geomorphology

ANALYSIS - OVER A VARIETY
OF TIME INTERVALS
Steady time
No change in form
Short term period

Graded time
An average condition
maintained
Periodic fluctuations about
the mean
Medium term period

Cyclic time
Gradual overall change
Long term period
REMOTE SENSING
• What Is Remote Sensing?

• Basic Principle

• Types of Remote Sensing useful in Geomorphologic

Interpretation

1.     Multi-Spectral
2.     Thermal
3.     Hyperspectral
4.     Radar
REMOTE SENSING (contd…)
• Aspects of Remote Sensing useful in Geomorphology

1.     Satellite Images

2.     Remote Sensing is often cheaper than on-site analysis and mapping

3.     Digital format of images allows for quantitative measurements of

landforms.

4.     Digital Image Processing Techniques pull information from imagery

that may not be seen with the naked eye.

5. Different types of Remote Sensing (radar, hyperspectral, multi-

spectral, thermal) can be used to extract information.
REMOTE SENSING(contd…)
• Areas of Geomorphology that make use of Remote Sensing

1.     Coastal Monitoring – Coastal Erosion

2.     Soil Changes – Desertification

3.     Glacial Movement and Composition

  4.     Fluvial Geomorphology and Flood Control

5.     Natural Hazards-Earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides

Seismic Geomorphology in
Exploration & Development
• consequence of the advent of high-quality and
affordable, widespread 3D seismic data currently available

• 3D seismic data affords plan view images of depositional

elements

• such images can enhance predictions of the spatial and

temporal distribution of subsurface lithology,stratigraphic
trapping capabilities

• techniques employed to extract stratigraphic insights from

seismic data are time slices, reflection attribute
mapping,interval attribute mapping,
Multiresolution Spline & their
Applications
• To fully model and analyse the complexity of the landscape

• Data structure in last decades – Triangulations

its disadvantage

• At present – spline based techniques

can handle millions of data points
surfaces can easily be evaluated at different scales
for terrain analysis in GIS applications
SPLINE MODEL(contd…)

• combination of Java 3D for visualisation and the C++ spline

library - easy to develop a powerful application for moving
around in a 3D landscape

• smoothing effect of splines may be both positive and

negative -It may remove noise and errors in the input data

• Today, elevation information is represented on computers

as elevation data in a digital format (DEM).

• Different formats - triangulated irregular networks

(TIN), regular grids, contour lines and scattered data points.
SOME PRACTICAL EXAMPLES
• GIS and Remote Sensing Based Inventory and Application for
Bamboo Livelihood Development

• Creation of Digital City Model from a Nadir Aerial Photo Using

Building Shadow

• GIS software applications for insurance

• Enhanced security through GIS and GPS

• Web services and GIS technologies

• GIS-based software applications for environmental risk

management
APPLICATIONS
• 1. Soil Geomorphology

• 2. Restoring Ecology

• 3. Application related to GIS

CONCLUSION
What the Future Holds

1. Back to large scale studies!

2. Tapping into ocean sediments

– Detailed info on the climatic and erosional history of
Earth

3. Interplanetary studies
