the Helideck Fire Team, the
necessity for its use, and legislation governing its design

• How to replace equipment whilst at the Centre

When?
During all helicopter movements
Why?
To enable helideck crews to operate efficiently, effectively and safely in an
emergency situation
How many?
All helideck fire team members must wear full protective clothing

General
Considerations

• All fire fighting clothing must be worn with undergarments

• Fire fighting clothing should not be worn for any other purpose (e.g.
fuelling)

• All fire fighting clothing must be stored and maintained in accordance with
S.I. 743 (PFEER)

Nomex

Considerations:

• Good full body protection

• Can be water-proofed

• Good protection against radiated heat

• Note that Nomex is not to be regarded as “Close Proximity”

Close Proximity Suit

Considerations:

 Good full body protection


 Can be waterproofed
 Excellent protection against radiated heat
 Allows approach to otherwise inaccessible areas
 Note: The C.P. suit is not a fire entry suit
 Loses reflective quality when dirty
 Beware of flaking of aluminised external surface
due to incorrect storage

 Duty holders should ensure compliance with SI 3139 when selecting


PPE for fire fighting duties

 UKOOA Guidance on the management of helideck operations also give


the following examples of standards which may also be appropriate

Regulation 18 - Suitability of Personal Protective Equipment for Use in an Emergency

This regulation requires the duty holder to:-


 Provide PPE for use in an emergency
 Establish a written scheme for examination
and testing of PPE
 Keep records of the results of such examinations and tests

Breathing Apparatus - CAP 437

• BA is provided to enable the wearer to work in an atmosphere which


would otherwise not support life

• At least two, positive pressure, BA sets complete with ancillary equipment


plus two reserve cylinders should be provided

• Helicopter Landing Officers (HLO’s) responsibility to ensure BA is


checked daily and maintained so that it can be used quickly and
effectively at all times

 BA sets should be located in suitable storage containers
