and survival of a business.

and progress

organization's agenda

B. Creating a Positive Workplace for Your
Associates

A place where associates (employees) are

happy and motivated
1. Creating a Positive Workplace
Three ways to develop a sincere manager-associate relationship
are balance, timing, and clarity (White 2002).
– Balance means having set standards for reinforcing actions.
– Timing means recognizing actions or achievements when they
occur.
– Clarity means keeping praise simple and specific.

Managers must also promote interpersonal relationships between

associates.
– Positive workplace relationships also can have external effects.
– Customer satisfaction can be increased by associates'
ambiance—happy associates lead to happy customers
2. Mission Statements
- Creating a Mission Statement
- Endorsing a Mission Statement
- Reinforcing a Mission Statement
C. Developing Strong Teamwork to Support
Excellence in Extension Programming

1. Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people

to attain uncommon results
2. Trust lies at the heart of a functioning, cohesive
team. Without it, teamwork is all but impossible.
3. All great relationships, the ones that last over
time, require productive conflict in order to grow".
4. In the context of a team, commitment is a function
of two things: clarity and buy-in.
Highly functioning teams can work together in the
following ways to achieve excellence in Extension:
• Choose to work with individuals you trust.
• Embrace conflict as the process by which good
products become great.
• Develop one or more clear goals for the
programming your team wants to conduct.
• Establish critical elements of the program that are
mandatory for everyone
• Believe that your program will achieve excellence!
D. Diversity in the Workplace: Benefits,
Challenges, and the Required Managerial
Tools

Benefits of Diversity in the Workplace

• Respecting individual differences can
increase productivity.
• In an era when flexibility and creativity are
keys to competitiveness, diversity is critical
for an organization’s success.
Challenges of Diversity in the Workplace
• Managing diversity is more than simply
acknowledging differences in people.
• It involves recognizing the value of differences,
combating discrimination, and promoting
inclusiveness.
• Negative attitudes and behaviors can be barriers
to organizational diversity because they can
harm working relationships and damage morale
and work productivity (Esty et al. 1995).
Required Tools for Managing Diversity
• Managers must understand discrimination and its consequences.
• Managers must recognize their own cultural biases and
prejudices (Koonce 2001).
Diversity is not about differences among groups, but rather about
differences among individuals. Each individual is unique and does
not represent or speak for a particular group.
• Organizations need to develop, implement, and maintain ongoing
training.
• Managers must also understand that fairness is not necessarily
equality..
• Promoting a safe place for associates to communicate, social
gatherings and business meetings

 When not negotiating would cost you, or you have something to
gain
 When there has been a misunderstanding, or no understanding
or agreement
 When you would prefer to openly discuss difference.
 To be a model by demonstrating what effective negotiation is all
about
There are many types of negotiators.:
 The aggressive:
 The long pauser: .
