I • COUNTRY:INDIA • STATE:RAJASTHAN • DISTRICT:JAISALMER • ESTABLISHMENT:1805 • BUILT BY:GUMAN CHAND PATWA INTRODUCTION • Haveli is a traditional townhouse or Mansion in India, Pakistan,Nepal and Bangladesh usually one with histo rical and architectural significance. • The word Haveli is derived from arabic Hawali meanin g `Partition' or 'Private space'. • On 28th june we visited Patwon ki Haveli located in Jai salmer,Rajasthan. • This Haveli is considered as one of the important have lis' of Jaisalmer because of the following two reasons: It was the first Haveli to be erected in Jaisalmer. It wasn't just a single Haveli but a cluster of five small Havelis'. HISTOR Y • The first among these havelis' was commisioned and constructed in the y ear 1805 by Guman Chand Patwa. • It is believed that Patwa was a rich man and was a renowned trader of hi s time. • He ordered the construction of separate stories for each of his five sons. • Although the whole building is made of sandstone,the main gateway of t he Patwon ki Haveli is brown in colour. • These were completed in the span if 50years. • All five houses were constructed in the first 60years if the 19th century. • This is the largest havelis' of jaisalmer and stands in a narrow lane. • This Haveli is presently occupied by the government,which uses it for var ious purposes. • The office of the Archiological survey of India and state art and craft dep artment is situated in the haveli itself. CLIMATIC ANALYSIS • As this haveli is located in the hot and dry climate o f Rajasthan it has certain architectural features whic h include Facades,Courtyards and small windows. • Treating open space in building design to respond t o the local climate.Air movement caused by temper ature differences is utilized in the natural ventilatio n of building. SOCIO-CULTURE ASPECTS • The chowk or courtyard served as the center for various ceremonies and rituals.The sacred Tulsi plant was placed here and worshipped t o bring prosperity to the house. • The courtyard at times separated areas for men and women and pr ovided them with privacy. • The entrance of the haveli leads to the house temple. • They had a secret locker which from the outside looked like a niche. • They used this locker to store Opium. • There's an open space opposite to the haveli which was used by the m for family functions. • Currently this space is put up with handicraft shops and for puppet s hows. • The building is planned around two courtyards,the
one in the front is much smaller than the rear one. • The front part of the building is three storeys high a nd has the main liiving quarters. • The rear portion is two storeys high and contains th e ancillary accomadations. DETAILING • Patwon ki haveli is famous fir it's exquisite eork of mirrors on the walls and ceilings and exclusive paintings of the tra ditional times. • The patwon ki haveli reflects the unique architecture of jai salmer of the traditional times in Rajasthan. • The exclusive mirror works and the beautiful paintings of P atwon ki haveli portray the rich artistic caliber and creative imagination of the local craftsmen of the ancient times. • The porticos are made of stone and wood. • Patwon ki haveli is renowned for intricate yellow sandston e jharokhas or balconies.
