In, At, On, During, Until
What are
prepositions?

• A Preposition is a word
that usually comes
before a noun or
pronoun to show time,
place and direction.
• It is a word that shows a
relationship between
one word in a sentence
to another word.
Time Prepositions:
At, On, In, During,
Until

• These prepositions tell


when something happens.
IN
• Parts of the day: in the morning, afternoon, evening…

• Months: January, February…

• Years: 2010, 2019…

• Seasons: summer, winter…


ON
• Days of the week: Monday, Tuesday morning…

• Dates: the 12th of July, my birthday, Christmas Day…


AT
• Times: three o’clock, midday, midnight…

• Special occasions: Christmas, Easter…

• Moments: night, the same time, sunrise…


DURING
• Events or times when it is particularly important that
the event is going on for a continued time.

• Examples:
During the carnival, Simon lost his shoe.
My friend always calls during my favorite show.
I hate travelling during rush hour.
UNTIL
• Indicates that something continues from one fixed
time to another fixed time.

• Examples:
I’ll wait until noon, and then I’m leaving.
She studied until bedtime.
My mom is away until the 4th of December.
Memory Strategy
1. Imagine yourself as a little baby sitting ON a cushion that is in the
shape of the number of your birth date.
2. Now see that little baby on that number cushion sitting IN a crib that
has your birthday month written largely across it.
3. This crib is AT a playground in the shape of a big clock that shows the
time you were born.
4. Imagine this picture happening DURING a crazy event that is going on
around the baby.
5. Finally, picture the baby crying UNTIL something happens to make it
stop.
