CLINICAL CLERK AMEC-BCCM TASTE Sensation produced when a substance in mouth reacts with taste buds is called TASTE.
Five basic tastes:-
1. Sweet 2. Sour 3. Salty 4. Bitter and 5. Umami TASTE BUDS Taste buds are present on the upper surface of the tongue, Soft palate, upper esophagus and epiglottis.
Taste buds have ability to respond to dissolved
molecules and ions is called tastants.
Taste receptor cells cluster to form taste buds
(papillae). TASTE BUDS Taste buds are present on papillae raised protrusions. There are 4 types : 1. Fungiform 2. Filiform 3. Foliate 4. Circumvallate Information about taste is transmitted to brain by: 1. Facial (CN VII) 2. Glossopharyngeal (CN IX) 3. Vagus nerve (CN X) LINGUAL PAPILLAE FILIFORM PAPILLAE : These are the most numerous of the lingual papillae. They are fine, small, cone-shaped papillae covering most of the dorsum of the tongue. They are responsible for giving the tongue its texture and are responsible for the sensation of touch. Unlike the other kinds of papillae, filiform papillae do not contain taste buds. FILIFORM PAPILLAE They cover most of the front two-thirds of the tongue’s surface. LINGUAL PAPILLAE FUNGIFORM PAPILLAE : These are club shaped projections on the tongue, generally red in color. They are found on the tip of the tongue, scattered amongst the filiform papillae, but are mostly present on the tip and sides of the tongue. They have taste buds on their upper surface which can distinguish the five tastes: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter and Umami. FUNGIFORM PAPILLAE They have a core of connective tissue. LINGUAL PAPILLAE FOLIATE PAPILLAE : These are short vertical folds and are present on each side of the tongue. They are located on the sides at the back of the tongue. There are four or five vertical folds, and their size and shape is variable. The foliate papillae appear as a series of red colored, leaf–like ridges of mucosa. They are covered with epithelium, lack keratin and so are softer, and bear many taste buds. They are usually bilaterally symmetrical. LINGUAL PAPILLAE CIRCUMVALLATE PAPILLAE : These are dome-shaped structures on the human tongue that vary in number from 8 to 12. They are situated on the surface of the tongue immediately in front of the foramen cecum and sulcus terminalis, forming a row on either side; the two rows run backward and medially, and meet in the midline. Each papilla consists of a projection of mucous membrane from 1 to 2 mm. wide, attached to the bottom of a circular depression of the mucous membrane; the margin of the CIRCUMVALLATE PAPILLAE depression is elevated to form a wall (vallum). TASTE BUDS About 50-150 taste cells found in a taste bud These cells represent all 4 tastes Single taste cell restricted to only single type of receptor Taste buds have 3 types of cells: 1. Supporting cells 2. Sensory cells 3. Basal cells Taste buds has a pore that opens out to the surface of tongue.
