In the Philippines, coffee has a history as rich as its flavor.

The first coffee tree was introduced in Lipa, Batangas in
1740 by a Spanish Franciscan monk. From there, coffee
growing spread to other parts of Batangas like Ibaan,
Lemery, San Jose, Taal, and Tanauan. Batangas owed much
of its wealth to the coffee plantations in these areas and
Lipa eventually became the coffee capital of the
Philippines.
In a small town in Batangas, there lived Don Miguel, a
wealthy landowner with his 3 children namely Satur,
Manuel, and Kapra.
Don Miguel died which caused Kapra’s depression.
She met Pedring whom she fell inlove with but Satur was
not supportive about it.
Kapra and Pedring planned to runaway which caused Satur
to become furious that he burned the fields.
A plant grew in the unburned portion with fruits that looked
like two hearts placed on top of each other.

Third Person POV

The third person is the most common type of narration. Of

this type, two varieties are used in most of the novels you
read. Omniscient narration provides an insight to the
thoughts, feelings, and impressions of all the characters and
events. We receive information from an all-knowing
vantage point—and we even know what’s going on when
nobody is around to experience it.
The greatest escape a child can do in the name of love in the Filipino
context is to elope. Among the outlandish cultural values
that Filipinos pride themselves of is their so-called “close family ties”
and to elope with someone may affect a family’s reputation. The story
speaks so much about what love is in this century. People nowadays
are impulsive decision makers. They are easily persuaded especially
when the heart speaks or love prevails.
Ang alamat ni

Tungkung Langit at Alunsina

Tungkung Langit (Pillar of the Sky)
• Industrious, loving and kind god
• His chief concern was how to impose order over the whole
confused set-up of things
• Husband of Alunsina

Alunsina (The Unmarried One)

• Lazy, jealous and selfish goddess
• Her only work was to sit by the window of their heavenly
home and amuse herself with her pointless thoughts.
• Wife of Tungkung Langit
The setting was in a world that is formless and void.
There was no sky or earth – only a bottomless deep and a
world of mist.
The world was formless and empty.

There only exists two deities named Tungkung Langit, who seeks to
create order amidst the chaotic world, and his wife Alunsina, who
does nothing than sat at her window and thinking pointless thoughts.

One day Tungkung Langit told Alunsina that he would be away from
home to put an end to the chaotic disturbance and position things
properly but Alunsina was suspicious so she sent the breeze to spy on
his husband.

Angered by Alunsina’s lack of trust, Tungkung Langit lost his temper

and in his rage, he divested his wife of powers and drove her away.
The absence of Alunsina caused him sorrow and emptiness so to
soothe his loneliness he created the sea and the earth, he planted the
ground trees and flowers, and he took his wife’s jewelleries and
scattered it in the skies however that did not make her return.

Up to this time, old folks say Tungkung Langit still lives alone in his
home and every time it rains, the people of Panay believes that it was
his tears and when it thunders hard, he was sobbing so hard calling
for his wife to come back.

The story uses the Third Person Point of View wherein
the narrator does not participate in the action of the story as
one of its characters but lets us know exactly how the
characters feel. Limited, because the reader enters only one
character's mind throughout the entire work.
In our opinion, the relevance of this story to the present day
society is it teaches us to value a person for who he truly is. People
nowadays tend to fall in love blindly like teens today who looks only
at the outside appearance and not the inside. Love can be blinding
sometimes. We have this tendency that when we fall, we disregard
their flaws and focus only to their bright side. In the case of
Tungkung Langit he was blinded with fury that he drove Alunsina
away. He then later realized Alunsina’s significance in his life and
regret followed. That’s why we should not take someone for granted
or disregard their worth because just like Tungkung Langit the ones
that we let go of might be the ones we love and need the most.
In the story Tungkung Langit and Alunsina, it could be related to
some of the problems that the couples may face in their journey. For
example in the story Alunsina didn't trust her husband and even sent a
spy. The word TRUST is a big word because it is the foundation in
every relationship. Trust comes next to love because how can you
love a certain person if in the first place you didn’t even trust him or
her. Another thing Tungkung Langit was over powered by his
emotions and because of that he drove his wife away. After several
days, he realized what he had done was wrong and it was too late to
say sorry to her.
Sometimes in every relationship there must be understanding for the
problems to be settled before it was too late and we must not be
overpowered by our emotions because it may hurt the one that we
love. Ika nga nila “Nasa huli ang pagsisisi” and it really happened to
loves was already gone.
