Quadratics

WHAT ARE QUADRATICS?

 The name quadratic comes from the word

“quad” meaning square as the variable
gets squared
 It is also referred to as an “equation of
degree 2”
 The graph of a quadratic function gives a
u-shaped figure known as a parabola
STANDARD FORM
  A quadratic equation has the form:

 and are known values such that is not zero

 The values are the coefficients of the equation
 The value of is referred as the leading coefficient
 The value of is referred as the constant
 is the variable

HOW TO SOLVE?
 Solutions to a quadratic equation is when it is equal to zero
 The solutions are referred to roots or zeros
 There are usually two solutions
 There are 3 ways to solve quadratics
 Factoring
 Completing the Square
 Quadratic Formula
Factoring
 Factoring
a quadratic equation is to find factors, something to multiply to get the quadratic equation
 Example

 and are the factors of

 Then set each factor equal to zero and solve for the variable
 Example
 and
 and are the solutions
 Note: to verify the factors are valid multiply the factors known as expanding
