Formation of Comparative Adjectives


There are two ways to make or to "form" a comparative adjective:
To compare a one-syllable adjective ending with a consonant, add -ER.
Examples:
small smaller than
The car is faster than the bike.
sweet sweeter than
The bike is slower than the car. long longer than
strong stronger than Terry is older than Kate / Terry is fatter than Kate
clean cleaner than Kate is younger than Terry / Kate is prettier than Terry
new newer than Kate is thinner than Terry
cheap cheaper than
If the one-syllable adjective already ends with the letter e, form the comparative by adding -R:
Examples
nice nicer than
Ocean Bank is smaller than Sheraton Hotel
wise wiser than
If the one-syllable adjective ends with a single consonant preceded by a vowel, double the consonant and add -
ER
big bigger than
thin thinner than
Adjectives with two syllables, ending in –y , drop the “Y” and add -IER

We use superlative adjectives when talking about three or more things (not two things).
In the example below, "biggest" is the superlative form of the adjective "big":

The Circus: Superlatives and Comparatives


The Rodriguez Brothers Circus is in town! Every year, the circus arrives and stays
for a week. Then they go to the next town.
There are not many animals in the circus. People told the circus that they didn't
like seeing animals performing. There is an elephant called Jacob and two old Read through the text about a circus, then answer the
