Title

 Your university recommends that your title be no

more than 20 words in length

 It should not contain abbreviations or words that serve

no purpose

 Your title may take up one or two lines

 Your title should be specific and clearly indicate what

the core focus of your study is
Chapter 1: Introduction

Chap I requires the following sections:

 Background
 Problem Statement
 Purpose of the Research
 Research Questions
 Significance of the Study
 Delimitations (Boundaries you set for the research)

Examples of in-text citation are below.

 According to Wenner & Campbell (2017), teacher

leadership is a concept where the role of teachers is
supposed to be greater than classroom teaching and its
preparation.

 The principal has to work with the teacher to find out their
strengths and weaknesses, and seek ways to support them
in overcoming their weaknesses (Klem & Connel, 2004).
Background
 Begin with why you chose this topic/what interested you to
carry on this research

 Are there theories, concepts, or terms, that may be

unfamiliar to the target audience? If yes introduce them to
the readers.

 What are existing practices/beliefs about the topic?

 What are the gaps/missing links that you want to study

through this research?
What is Problem Statement?
 The problem statement is the description of an
issue or a problem you wish to research on

 The problem statement could be just one or two

sentence/s but, it should be accompanied by a few
paragraphs to elaborate on the problem

 The problem statement should justify or establish

that your problem is worthy enough for studying
Writing a Problem Statement
Problem statement comes from your topic/issue you want
to study

 State the problem in the first paragraph

 Justify the problem statement:

 Justify the problem as an important issue/s.
 Explain what is not known about the problem, how it is
every severe or extensive, and why it matters in some way.
 Provide documentation (literature citation or statistics) if
available.
Examples- beginning a problem statement
This study intends to determine whether rewarding employees in Company X motivates its
employees or not. (Causal relationship)

“Is there a difference in organizational commitment between employees working in branch A

and B of a same bank named Z?” (Identify a difference)

What is……………. or Why is……………. (Descriptive to describe the significance of a

situation, or certain phenomenon)

The major problem intended to study here is the relationship between display of advertisement
and increase in users using the advertised product.

The underlying purpose is to investigate successful traits a leader in Company XYZ follows.

Today we have too many adulteration in food in too many health complexities. If this
overlooked…….
Purpose of the Research
 The research purpose is a statement of "why" the study is being
conducted, or the goal of the study

 The goal of a study might be to identify or describe a concept or

to explain or predict a situation or provide solution to a situation

 The research purpose should be stated objectively and in a way

that does not reflect particular biases or values of the researcher

 The purpose is generated from problem statement and once

formed should give an overall direction for the study
An example could be
 Problem:
 Unsupervised dieting is widespread where the side effects
related to physical and mental health have not been examined
extensively.

 The purpose of this study is to

 Thoroughly examine the side effects of unsupervised dieting on
physical and mental health of a person practicing it.
 Highlight the life long impact of unsupervised dieting on both
physical and mental health of a person
 Advocate and encourage people to adopt appropriate dieting methods
 Recommend ways to practice proper dieting approaches
Research Questions
 To formulate research questions
 Think of your topic/issue
 Work on to narrow down your topic/issue to make your questions very
clear and focused

 For example
 Topic – Migrating for employment: Statistics of Nepali Youths
 Problem – To develop better understanding on what jobs and pay
Nepali migrate abroad for.
 Research Questions
 Which countries do majority of Nepalese migrate to for employment?
 What are the five major jobs they get?
 What is their average annual earning?
Significance of the Study
 The significance of the study should determine who
benefits from the study and how that specific
audience will benefit from its findings.

 The significance of the study could be simply

reflected by the questions:
 What significant scientific contribution is my study
making to my field of research?
 Who could benefit from this study?
Significance of the Study
An example

This study will contribute to the improvement of

education in architecture not only in this faculty but also
in other universities nationally. I hope that this research
will encourage the faculty administration and also the
teachers to be drawn to this new method of teaching – a
student-centered approach – and to adapt it as an
effective teaching strategy that will benefit the students.
Delimitations
 Limitations are the shortcomings, conditions or
influences that cannot be controlled by the
researcher that place restrictions on your
methodology and conclusions.

 Delimitations are choices made by the researcher

which should be mentioned. They describe the
boundaries that you have set for the study.
Delimitations
 Delimitations include the population of a study,
variables, statistical analysis and focus of the
research.

 Typically, a researcher selects one methodology for

a study and refers to other possible methodological
approaches as delimitations.
