General ways to improve
respiratory health.
RESPIRATORY
01 DISEASES
o A type of disease that affects the lungs and other parts of the respiratory
system and has various conditions that affect different parts of our
respiratory system and hinder our ability to breathe.
o These conditions can be chronic or infectious. Chronic lung
diseases fall into one of two main classes: obstructive or restrictive.
o Some individuals have multiple lung conditions.
CONDITIONS AND CLASSES OF RESPIRATORY
DISEASES

OBSTRUCTIVE RESTRICTIVE INFECTIOUS

 - involve blocked or - reduces the volume of air  - usually temporary,
narrowed airways, making that the lungs can hold. although some respiratory
it difficult for the lungs to Lungs can lose their infections can become

air for fresh air. expand.
02BRONCHIAL
ASTHMA
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Bronchial asthma is a
chronic inflammatory
disease and medical
condition which causes
the airway path of the
lungs to swell and narrow.
CAUSES

Smoking Infections such as cold

or flu

Allergens Air pollution

Emotional stress or
Food additives
anxiety
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- Shortness of breath
- Tightness of chest
- Wheezing
- Excessive coughing or a cough that keeps you awake at night
03BRONCH
ITIS
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Bronchitis is an
inflammation of the lining
of your bronchial tubes,
which carry air to and from
your lungs. -may be either
acute or chronic.
CAUSES

Long-term exposure to
irritants that damage
your lungs and airways

Smoking
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- Cough - Shortness of breath

- Production of mucus - Slight fever and chills
- Fatigue - Chest discomfort
04PNEUMO
NIA
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Pneumonia is an infection
that inflames the air sacs
in one or both lungs. The
air sacs may filled with
fluid or pus (purulent
material) causing cough
with phlegm or pus, fever,
chills, and difficulty
breathing.
CAUSES

Bacteria, viruses,
fungi Influenza

Respiratory Syncytial SARS-CoV-2

Virus (RSV)

Streptococcus pneumoniae
(pneumococcus)
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- Chest pain - Fatigue

- Confusion or changes in - Lower than normal body
mental awareness temperature
- Cough which may produce - Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
phlegm - Shortness of breath
05COMMON
COLD
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Common Cold also known as

acute viral rhino pharyngitis
and acute coryza is an
infectious disease that infects
the upper respiratory system
that easily spread when an
infected person cough,
sneezes or simply through
hand-to-hand contact.
CAUSES

Rhinoviruses

Coronaviruses
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- Low grade fever - Slight body aches

- Sore throat - Mild headache
- Nasal congestion - Sneezing
- Runny/stuffy nose - Coughing
06LUNG
CANCER
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Lung Cancer is considered as one of

the most dangerous type of cancer as
the uncontrolled growth of abnormal
cells start off in the lungs and air
passages. It is characterized by two
main types: non-small cell lung
cancer and small cell lung cancer.
Between the two, the small cell lung
cancer is more aggressive, spreading
faster than non-small cell lung
cancer.
CAUSES

Smoking Previous radiation

therapy

Exposure to secondhand Family history of

smoke lung cancer
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- Chest pain - Hoarseness

- Cough that does not go away - Infections
- Coughing up blood or rust-colored- New onset of wheezing
sputum - Shortness of breath
- Feeling tired or weak - Weight loss and loss of appetite
07EMPHYSEM
A
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Emphysema is a type of COPD

(chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease) and it is a lung condition
that causes shortness of breath. In
people with emphysema, the air sacs
in the lungs (alveoli) are damaged.
Over time, the inner walls of the air
sacs weaken and rupture, creating
larger air spaces instead of many
small ones.
CAUSES

Smoking Air pollution

Exposure to secondhand Inhaled dust from

smoke environment or workplace
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- shortness of breath or dyspnea

- a chronic cough that produces mucus
- wheezing and a whistling or squeaky sound when breathing
- tightness in the chest
08
RHINITIS
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Rhinitis is an inflammation
and swelling of the mucous
membrane of the nose,
characterized by a runny nose
and stuffiness and usually
caused by the common cold
or a seasonal allergy.
CAUSES

Common cold Histamine intolerance

Seasonal allergy Allergens

SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- sneezing - itchy and watery eyes

- a runny or itchy nose - dark circles under the eyes
- coughing - frequent headaches
- a sore or scratchy throat - excessive fatigue
09TUBERCOL
OSIS
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease

caused by bacteria called
Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
The bacteria usually attack
the lungs, but they can also
damage other parts of the
body. TB spreads through the
air when a person with TB of
the lungs or throat coughs,
sneezes, or talks.
CAUSES

Bacteria called Mycobacterium

tuberculosis
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- a bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or - Weakness or fatigue

longer - Fever
- weight loss or loss of appetite - Night sweats
- coughing up blood or mucus
10CYSTIC
FIBROSIS
ABOUT THE DISEASE

Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary

disease that affects the lungs and
digestive system. The body
produces thick and sticky mucus
that can clog the lungs and
obstruct the pancreas. It can be
life-threatening, and people with
the condition tend to have a
shorter-than-normal life span.
CAUSES

Faulty gene

Change or mutation, in
a gene called CFTR
SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

- salty-tasting skin - poor weight gain in spite of excessive

- persistent coughing appetite
- shortness of breath - greasy, bulky stools
- wheezing - nasal polyps, or small, flesh growths
found in the nose.

CONCLUSION
CONCLUSIONS

Anything you breathe in can affect our

respiratory system including germs,
tobacco smoke and harmful substances
like dust and chemicals. Nevertheless,
some respiratory problems are easily
treated if they’re properly diagnosed,
say physicians, and many are
preventable. The most important
factors relating to respiratory health
other than genetics and family history
are smoking, air pollution and obesity.
