TOPIC: EFFECTS OF DRUG AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONG YOUTHS
AGED 18-20 YEARS IN KIAMBUCOUNTY.
CHAPTER ONE : BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Drug and substance abuse is a problem affects all sectors of society in all counties
in Kenya. In particular it affects the freedom and development of youth who are the
most valuable assets. The gravity and characteristic of this problem vary from
region to region and county to county. Drug and substance abuse among youths has
risen to unprecedented levels.

concerns among community members . Many students are at risk of poor academic
performance, behavior problems and even contacting HIV and AIDS but also the
impact of the strategies applied in schools in response to the scourge. However ,
there was no research done to evaluate the impact of those strategies in Githunguri.
To this effect, it was necessary to conduct a study of this nature and determine the
impact of the school-based drug and substance abuse preventive strategies.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of drug and
substance abuse preventive strategies used by teachers and drug
enforcement commission at Kiambaa, St.Francis , Maryhill And
Campuses In Kiambu County.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The study was guided by the following objectives
1. To establish factors that influence student to abuse drugs and substance in
schools.
2. To determine the impact of preventive strategies for drug and substance on
students.
3. To identify ways of enhancing preventive strategies for drug and substance
abuse education in schools.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The study aimed at answering the following research questions.
1. What are the confine factors that influence students to abuse drugs and
substance at school?
2. What is the impact of the preventive strategies for drug and substance abuse on
students?
3. How can drug and substance abuse prevention strategies be enhanced in
schools?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

At a time when there is widespread concern by the community and government

about drug and substance abuse among students in schools a study of this nature is
important . Its findings may help schools and the drug enforcement commission to
improve upon the strategies in use . In addition, they may be aware of other
challenges they have to address in their school-based drug and substance
preventive programs.
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

It was difficult to get a date from all participants due to the sensitive nature of the
study. The sample was not represented enough and the findings are consistent with
the local.

CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the research methodology and consists the research design of
the target population, sample of the study, sampling techniques , research
instruments, piloting of the instruments , data collection procedures and data
analysis techniques.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study design was descriptive survey design. This method of collecting
information by interviewing or administering a questionnaire to a sample of
individuals . This type of design was also useful when collecting information about
people’s attitudes, opinions and habits.
TARGET POPULATION

Target population is that population to which a researcher wants to generate the

results of the study. The target population for this study was form 3 students totaling
to . they were preferred since it was assumed that they are at the peak of their
adolescence therefore more conversant with drug related issues in their respective
school .
SAMPLE SIZE DETERMINATION
Minimum sample size will be calculated using the formula by Fischer et al 1988 as shown below

N= Z2Pq
d2
Where d= desired sample size
z= normal deviation = 1.96 that corresponds to 96% confidential intervals
p= proportion of the target population estimated to have desired characteristics
Q= 1-p
D= degree of freedom =0.05

N= 1.962X0.06X 0.094
( 0.05)2
= 87 participants
RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The research instruments used for this study were questionnaires. The
questionnaires were designed using closed and open ended questions.
DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES

Data collection refers to gathering information aimed at providing some facts. The
researcher sought permission from the county director of education to conduct
research . The questionnaires were administered by the researcher to the
respondents.
ETHICAL CONSIDERATION

The respondents consent was sought before administering the questionnaires .

The researcher assumed the respondents of confidentiality on the information
given on the questionnaires. The information given by the respondents was not to
be used for any other purpose other than education research.
