Are (Present)→ were (Past)

◈ To show places
I was in the market yesterday with my mom.
They weren’t at home.
◈ To express feeling/emotion
He was sad because his cat died.
We were so happy at that time because we could graduate
together.
◈ To describe situation
The room was so dirty yesterday but it is already clean now.

◈ To describe the person
He was the chairman of English class last year.
It was always her that made me smile.

How to use BE
A sentence that contains BE, which is used for
those purposes above, has no passive form.

Active: I was at home yesterday.


Passive: At home was me yesterday. (X)

How to use BE in SIMPLE PAST TENSE
After BE, it is always NOUN, ADVERB, OR
ADJECTIVE (See the examples of BE in the
previous slides)
HOWEVER, for simple continuous tense, after
BE is Verb+ing, for example ‘I was swimming
yesterday when you came’.

To explain the situation in the past. The activity is already
finished and you are no longer doing it or experiencing the
moment at the time you are speaking about it.

The formula of Simple Past
Active Sentence
(+) Subject + Past Verb (Verb 2) + Object / Adverb + Adverb
(-) Subject + did not / didn’t + Verb 1 + Object/Adverb
(?) Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object/Adverb?

Example:
(+) I ate fish for lunch yesterday.
(-) I didn’t eat fish for lunch yesterday.
(?) Did you eat fish for lunch yesterday?

Passive Sentence
(+) Subject + BE + Past Participle (Verb 3) + Object / Adverb + Adverb
(-) Subject + BE + not + Past Participle (Verb 3) + Object/ Adverb +

Example:
(+) The fish was eaten by me for lunch yesterday.
(-) The fish was not eaten by me for lunch yesterday.
(?) Was the fish eaten by you for lunch yesterday?

HOW TO GIVE QUESTION IN PAST FORM
Yes/NO question:
BE + Subject + Object/Adverb?

Examples:
Was he a policeman? Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t
Were they your student last year? Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t
Was it hard for you? Yes, it was hard for me. / Not at all.
Was she sad because of her boyfriend? Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t.

Examples:
How did you know that movie? I knew it from a newspaper.
What did you do yesterday? I just slept and ate at home.
How much money did you spend? I spent about a million.
What did she wear in the meeting last week? She wore a Batik dress.
When did they arrive in the airport? They arrived at 7.
