How Remote Learning is Effecting New

Mexico Students

By: Autumn Donaldson

The effects of remote learning

When COVID-19 hit New Mexico on March 11th 2020 the Education System
was faced with the decision of keeping schools open or shutting them down.

Remote learning is where student and educator are not physically present in a
traditional classroom environment, instead information is relayed through
technology such as discussion boards, video conferences, and online
assessments

Remote learning has become the new normal to many students across the United
States.
Remote learning has shown to have several negative effects on students, today we
will be looking specifically at New Mexico

• Depression/anxiety
• Stress
• Isolation
• Lack of socialization
• Lower education level
• Higher suicide rates
This system of learning is a fairly new concept for students in
2020. This means there has been no previous attempts at lowering
or eliminating negative effects.

We are putting an entire generation of children at risk. It is

necessary to start making changes today to get students on a
happier and healthier routine.
Solutions

• Take breaks
• Maintain social connection
• Set up a regular routine
• Slowly transition into safe learning environments
Benefits of in-person learning

• Less distraction
• Richer source of information
• Social interaction
• More motivated
• Provided with healthy meals
• Able to exercise
Luckily in order to make a personal change for our New Mexico
students there is little to no costs. Doing things as simple as
changing your day to day routine can encourgae you to work
harder and stay motivated.

Making a personalized plan is the best way to naviagte through

the trials of remote learning.
Personal Solutions

1. Understand that you are not always going to succeed, expect

some failure and admit to mistakes.
2. Appreciate the pros of learning at home!
3. Create a balanced schedule that works for you.
4. Put your health and emotional needs first.
5. Celebrate your “wins”, big or small.
6. Map out your learning objectives and goals.
7. Know that this wont last forever!
New Mexico concerns

A KRQE report says “Remote learning is failing New Mexico students.”

According to a recent study presented to state lawmakers remote learning is

causing New Mexico students to fall behind.

The study said New Mexico students are missing out on four months to a years
worth of education because of remote learning.

Four in five New Mexico public school students are failing atleast one class.

APS parent Julian Carrasco comment that “My daughter misses the interaction
with her friends” and “She is more nervous to ask for help when she is online
than she normally is in the classroom.
New Mexico solutions

New Mexico Legislators discussed different solutions such as adding

extra days to the school year, but this comes with a hefty price.

Public School Department Secretary Ryan Stewart said “As we move

forward we are going to think about how we leverage every possible
available resource”.

In order to fix this educational gap the state is asking lawmakers to

consider extending the next school year by 10 to 25 days.

If lawmakers do go this route it could cost the state $138 million.

New Mexicos main focus is to get students back in school.
