SmartPort Roles
SmartPort roles are feature templates based on the type of devices in the network. Use of
SmartPort roles in the configuration greatly simplifies the L2 switching, security and PoE for IP
phones and wireless access points in the network.

Quality of Service (QoS)
IPv4 Layer 3 Type of Service (ToS) is used for IP Precedence within the
network

Smart Business Communications Solution 1.5
Quality of Service (QoS) – Traffic Classes
For QoS assurance within the network – appropriate bandwidth is allocated for various types of
traffic. The same parameters are used in the configuration of SR520s when the network
supports teleworkers.

Design Considerations – Dial Plan
• Establish a clear dial plan for all extensions, services and access codes
• It is an important step in the design to establish a clear dial plan for the
entire network to include
• Extension numbering range for each location
• Access codes for (e.g. PSTN, Operator etc.)
• Extension numbers for
• Multi-level Auto Attendant with customized greetings
• Voice Mail Pilot
• Hunt / Blast Group Pilot
• Intercom and Paging
• Call Park and Pick-up
• Meet-me Conference
• All on-net extension dialing must be globally unique
• Avoid partial overlap of dial strings
• Avoid overlapping strings of different lengths
Please refer to the SBCS 1.5 Design and Implementation guides for details

Smart Business Communications Solution 1.5
Wireless LAN in Controller based deployment
In the controller based deployment – the WLAN functionalities are coordinated through a
WLAN Controller (WLC526). – that results in :
Dynamic RF management
Centralized management of network security policies
Secure Guest access
Advanced support for user mobility and hand-off.

Smart Business Communications Solution 1.5
Design Considerations – CODEC choice and WAN BW
The voice sampling rate – as determined by the CODEC choice has a very
direct effect on the required WAN bandwidth. This is particularly important
when the WAN bandwidth is low. Constrained WAN bandwidth has highly
detrimental effect on the voice quality on inter-site or off-net calls.
