SOCIECUL/PHILPOPCUL

The word sociology has been derived from two terms, logus, which
means science or study, and socius, which means “group or
partners.”
Hence, sociology deals with the study of groups.
In a group, the interaction process is vital.
From this, patterns of behavior evolve.

---------

Sociology is concerned with how people behave in groups and how

group interaction shapes their behaviour.
The groups they study may be small, such as married couples, or
large, such as a subculture of suburban teenagers.
Sociologists also study the rules, organization, and the value system
which enable men to live together.
Sociology is concerned with social institutions, social problems, and
all other aspects of human behaviour.

----------------------

Sociology is a social science.

The social scientists study the social world.
In the study of sociology, one looks at the ways in which groups are
formed, and the results of group conduct.
He is concerned with ways in which a group affects its members and
ways in which members affect their groups.
TWO IMPORTANT PURPOSES OF SOCIOLOGY

• 1.The acquisition of knowledge to learn how society
works.
• 2.The application of this knowledge to the improvement
of society and the solution of social problems.
• HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
•
Sociology emerged as a separate discipline in the nineteenth century
•
This was a time of great social upheaval due largely to the French and
Industrial Revolutions
•
Several early sociologists shaped the direction of the discipline
•
18th and 19th century begun when western society was undergoing rapid and
dramatic changes. These where the Industrial Revolution (about 1750-1900)
and the French revolution of 1789.
•
The early sociologists who founded sociology were social philosophers,
economists, ministers whose ideas provided the basis of sociology.
• Industrial Revolution, in modern history,
the process of change from an agrarian
and handicraft economy to one dominated
by industry and machine
manufacturing. ... This process began in
Britain in the 18th century and from there
spread to other parts of the world (britannica.com).
• The French Revolution was a period of
time in France when the people overthrew
the monarchy and took control of the
government. When did it take place?
The French Revolution lasted 10 years
from 1789 to 1799. It began on July 14,
1789 when revolutionaries stormed a prison
called the Bastille.

• Louis XVI (Louis-Auguste; French pronunciation: [lwi sɛːz]; 23 August 1754 – 21

January 1793) was the last king of France before the fall of the monarchy during the
French Revolution.
