PRAYER BEFORE STUDY
By St. Thomas Aquinas

Lord, true source of light and wisdom,

give me a keen sense of understanding,
a retentive memory,
and the capacity to grasp things correctly.
Grant me the grace to be accurate in my expositions
and the skills to express myself
with thoroughness and clarity.
Be with me at the start of my work,
guide its progress and bring it to completion.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

For St. Anselm (11th century monk &
archbishop),

theology is
“faith seeking
understanding”.
What is Fundamental Theology ?

GOD’S REVELATION
Revelation is the process
through which God, in His
goodness and wisdom,
makes himself known to
humanity in order to invite
them in His own company
(Dei Verbum 2).
Humanity’s response to God’s
Revelation
By faith, human beings
completely submit their
intellect and will to God (Dei
Verbum, 5).
Sacred Scripture calls this
human response to God, the
author of revelation, “the
obedience of faith” (Rom 1:5;
16:26).
To “obey” (from Latin ob-audiere, to “hear or listen to”)

c. In the Church

d. In Other Religions
The Church believes that even non-
Christians “who do not know the
Gospel of Christ or his Church, but seek
God with a sincere heart, and, moved
by grace, try in their actions to do His
will as they know it through the dictates
of their conscience, may achieve
eternal salvation” (Lumen Gentium, 16).
e. Personal Experiences
God continues to
reveal Himself to us
in our personal
experiences through
the inspiration and
movement of the
Holy Spirit.

ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION
1. Do you think God is still revealing himself
to us (to you)?
2. Do you have a personal experience where
God reveals something to you, like simple
decision, enlightenment, etc.?
3. What was your response to that
revelation?
SUMMARY
 Theology is the study of God and of scientific knowledge of God and Divine things.
 Fundamental Theology is the branch of theology that systematically reflects on
the foundations of the Catholic faith.
 Revelation is the process through which God, in His goodness and wisdom, makes
himself known to humanity in order to invite them in His own company
 Faith is our belief on what we hope for. It is our response to God’s revelation to
us. Jesus, who is the Way, Truth, and Life, is the content of our faith.
 Creed is the profession of faith. We have The Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed.
 The Sacraments are the efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and
entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us.
INTEGRATION
If we do not “believe” basic Catholic doctrine we certainly will
not be motivated to obey fundamental Catholic moral
principles, nor participate meaningfully in Catholic worship.
Whether because of pride, distrust, or indifferent negligence,
we will not commit ourselves to the service of others for
Christ’s sake, nor be concerned for authentic worship of the
living God revealed by Jesus Christ. Thus, rejecting belief in
God, Christ and the Church involves many evil consequences
for individuals, families, and the community at large.
So we ask God to “help for our lack of faith”
as the only means of coming gradually to the
“truth” of ourselves, of others, and of God, in
our thoughts, our moral acts, and our prayer.
Only in Christ and the Spirit can we
perseveringly respond to the challenges of
“life in Christ” today.
Assignment:
In a ½ sheet of paper, write a brief reflection paper
answering the question:
1. (As a catholic, or as non-catholic, or as non-
Christian, or as a non-believer of God) What is the
importance of studying the Catholic creed and
sacraments?
2. What benefit shall I gain in studying this subject?
